i have a Bushy with that most hated AK type muzzle brake, if i chuck it up in my lathe and remove it right down to the original threads and replace it with an appropriate F.H./ Muzzle Brake, do i need to re-pin it ? or will it be no different than any other AR-15 that has a removable M.B./F.H. as long as it meets the 16.1 inch barrel length per BATFE requirements ??
thank you all in advance for your educational replys
It would be better to sell your barrel and buy a new one with the features you want.
i’ve never removed a pinned muzzle device, but i imagine turning it till its nothing more than plating on your muzzle would do the trick… take lots of pics and let us know how that goes
You probably have a 14.5’ barrel like my Bushmaster has. If you remove it you’ll have to replace it with something like a Phantom or another FH/ Comp to make it a legal 16"" assembly and it will have to be permanently attached. You can email Bushmaster Customer Service with your serial number and they can tell you your barrel length.
As long as you’re not in a BAN state, you just need to measure the barrel in order to determine whether you’d need to perm affix a new muzzle device. If it’s 16.1 you’re GTG, if it’s 14.5 then you’re going to need to use an extended A2 or a Phantom\Vortex\etc and affix it.
Now that being said…
+1. I’ve done this before. It’s not easy, and IMO it’s not worth the time it takes to do properly. Bushmaster pins it and then welds over the pin. You’re very likely to screw up the threads.
thank you all for your informative replys, i shall contact the Bushy folks.
would making my own F.H. be illegal ? i have been doing some drawings and sketches and i believe this F.H. design of mine is a better one than all the others
