This project started with the lower, using an 80% I finished. My intention was to do a 16" mid gas lightweight, but then I also decided to change out some parts on the 18" upper I built a few years ago. I hadn’t originally intended to use this lower with the upper, but until I finish the matching grey upper, it’s going to be a multicolored rifle.
Specs on the lower: Geissele SSA-E, V7 lower parts minus the take down pins, they are BAD Ti, Vltor A5 buffer assembly with a Tubb flat wire spring, magpul trigger guard and grip/stock.
Upper specs: Aero Precision upper, FN 18" rifle length CHF barrel, MI gen 2 SS rail, Geissele gas block, VG6 epsilon muzzle device, TA01 NSN on a Bobro mount, BCM mod4 charging handle, Harris bipod
Do you use the 45 degree offset sights for close in targets? Have you tried the TA01 BUIS? I know they are taller but it might be faster to use them if they are precise enough?
Yes, I use the offset irons for targets under 25 yards or so, in the 3 gun division I shoot in only one rifle optic is allowed, otherwise I would have a miniature red dot of some sort mounted on an offset. I have tried the backup sights on the TA 01, I find them awkward to use, I think it’s easier and faster to pivot the rifle 45 degrees rather than moving it down, or moving your head up to them. Plus, they are not particularly precise, the rear aperture is pretty large plus the sight radius is obviously very short, better than nothing I guess.
Thanks… You are going to laugh, but the offset irons are some kind of airsoft knockoffs that my buddy modded with actual Colt internal parts, they work well however and hold zero, plus they cost me zero dollars. I may end up replacing them with something folding. Haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet, so I can’t tell you about the VG6, judging from the reviews online, I expect it to work as advertised. No plans for an adjustable gas block, I expect that the combination of muzzle brake, rifle length gas system and A5 buffer system should make for a soft and flat shooting setup.
Yeah, I realize the exposed gas block is not ideal. When I originally built that upper the gas block I had at the time did not fit inside that rail. I may end up putting a longer rail on it now that it has a low profile gas block.
