I have a 10.5" MRP that I have tried a few different lights and mounts from my other AR’s, that I jsut don’t like the feel of. They just seem to bulky for the 10.5"
I’ve tried the 6P and G2X, in both the Gear Sector off-set mount and Thorntail mount (non-SBR version).
Both lights feel too bulky on the upper to me.
The Thorntail allows for increased rail space, but adds to the overall length. And Obvious less than ideal conditions right up near the muzzle.
The Gear Sector doesn’t increase the overall length but eats up rail/hand space (with these 2 lights).
I’m thinking about the M300A or the M600C.
I’m also interested in maybe a QD setup in a Larue mount.
Anyone have some experience with these on an SBR setup?
I have a M300A in a Thorntail SBR mount on my Noveske 10.5". Very happy with it. Not too heavy and the mount places the light in the right spot for my support thumb.
I have the same weapon / configuration. I switched to the THRONTAIL OFFSET 1913 & Surefire X300 Ultra with the XT07 remote switch on top behind the FBUIS. 500 lumens in a very short package keeping the Bezel out of the muzzle blast, with the Thorntail eliminating barrel shadowing & the with on top for ambi shooting.
I run an X300 on my 10.5, or pretty much on all of my rifles. For the 10.5 I have a 9" FSP rail that extends past the FSP to accommodate my grip. I am a right hander and I am currently running the light mounted to the FSP on the left side of the rifle. I have tried other set ups including left side rail mount, offset mount, but the FSP mount works best for my grip but most important is that I can still reach the light toggle controls with my thumb over grip when going to the support side with the light mounted on the FSP.
This is what I mention in my post above. On my 10.5 I maintain a FSP and I use a thumb over type of grip. With an x300 or TLR, the 9 o’clock position didn’t work and caused my to have light ND’s and I couldn’t toggle it support side. Moving it to an offset mount alleviated the inadvertent light issues but I still couldn’t operate the toggle when shooting support side. Moving to a FSB mount I can use an effective thumb over grip, have no negligent light discharge issues and when shooting support side I can still toggle the light with my thumb. Definitely gotta toothpaste the lens on a regular basis.
This photo shows a TLR1s that I threw on there however I prefer the firmer toggle of the X300 which is what I run.
I have an MRP cut to 11.5", and will be running the Surefire M300 in Gear-Sector’s offset mount placed on the 9:00 rail.
To me, this seems like one of the best and least-obtrusive setups. Unlike the Larue offset mount, the Gear Sector has a rounded and smoothed-out profile without a lever sticking off of it. This makes the actual mount act just like an extension of your normal rail covers, and allows you to run your hand to the end of the rail under the light.
I think the X300 mounted on the 12:00 rail in front of irons is also a great option…which also allows for ambi-activation…but I’m not really a fan of how easy it is to activate the rocker-switch and flash the light unintentionally.
I stole this photo from Trident…so I hope he doesn’t mind…but it’s a good illustration of how this setup would look on a 10.5" MRP. I’m going to use the tail-cap for activation though, as I hate wires on my guns.
The big question is, what are you using this weapon for? Is this a duty rifle used during dynamic entries, or a home defense/plinking rifle? The polymer Streamlight TLR-3 light is very small, inexpensive, and bright, but not too rugged for building clearing.
On my Swat rifle, which is a Colt R0933 with a Noveske rail and LP gas block, I use an X300U at 12 o’clock moved to the end of the rail with the front sight directly behind it.
It works great for me and stays out of the iron sight and Aimpoint sight picture.
Easy to use/deploy right or left handed. Since I’m not a big VFG or hang everything off of the rail system kinda guy it keeps everything on the 12 o’clock rail. Irons, lights, lasers, optics all ride up top and leave the other three sides clear for my hands.
I’m running a X300 in the 10/11 o clock position on my 10.5" SBR. It’s compact and very easy to manipulate the toggles with my left thumb. Here’s a pic of my setup. I’m using a Gear Sector mount.
I’d simplify it to running an X300, or some 3V Scout arrangement (M300 or VTAC-L43V psuedo-Scout).
The X300 will be the best for ambi use, or with an odd mount they’re pretty good. I run that on my 10.5" setup for that reason.
Otherwise, the most cost effective is the VTAC 3V L4 unit on a GearSector/03DG/IWC/VLTOR mount of your choosing - my other three rifles run either an M300 or the VTAC equivalent.
I have found that an X300 at 12 O Clock works best for me. Just move your BUIS back a few notches and you should be GTG. I run one on an MRP with KAC BUIS with no problem.
You could also look at Bucks new mount for use with Troy BUIS, it is a very clever mount, but with a 10.5 barrel you might not have the room for it, its definitely worth the look if you run Troy BUIS’s…
I’m happy with the 600 scout, granted mines 12", but I don’t feel like its too big for a SBR. I do need a better mount, the integrated one loosens on its own.
