My "New" Assault Rifle

Got a M1 Garand, and field stripped and took pics.

I think anyone can access the photo set I’ve created in Flickr, so give this link a whirl and let me know what you think.

Lots of photos.

Damn fine battle rifle.

Gen. Patton would approve.

Congrats, you’re going to love that rifle, I know I love mine.

Very nice. If I had the $ I’d have me one also.

That’s one of the finest battle rifles ever built, IMO. I bought a Garand from CMP a couple years ago.

Be prepared to draw a crowd when you go to the range. Everybody’s gonna’ want to handle it.

Just an FYI: Don’t use commercial ammo in it unless you have an adjustable gas plug, because you stand a good chance of bending the op rod. CMP has good deals on surp ammo. I’m a reloader, but their prices are hard to beat.

Here’s the link to their web site: http://forums.thecmp.org/
Lots of good info there.

Congrats. I bought mine, a CAI import (reman receiver and hodgepodge parts) many years ago for just under $400. It has been a great rifle. I don’t have the traceable history due to the reman receiver, but its accurate as hell and shoots great. One of my favorite rifles.

I wouldn’t say it is an assault rifle, but I would agree that it is nice. Congratulations!

Then you don’t know squat about World War II.

Actually, an assault rifle has been defined since the 50’s as a short rifle or carbine that fires an intermediate power cartridge, fed from a detachable box magazine, and is select fire. The StG-44 was the first general issue weapon that fits that definition.

A battle rifle or main battle rifle has been defined as a semi automatic or select fire rifle firing a full power cartridge. The M1 Garand is a great example of the type.

Nothing to get wrapped around the axel about though.

Whatever…geesh.

Nobody is giving you a hard time. Using proper nomenclature helps us to all “be on the same page” when discussing these weapons. Battle rifles and assault rifles are, indeed, two different things designed for two different roles in combat. Although I could use my M-14 clone M1A to assault a position it would still be a “(main) battle rifle”.

I respect what you are saying.

Sorry, I was just excited to share news of my M1 acquisition.

What are M1’s going for these days? I’d love to get another one.

Prices are all over the map, depending on the condition of the rifle and how much it contains “matching” pieces. Mine has the original receiver and barrel and several other parts.

You can check the CMP website for an idea on prices.

Of course, gunbroker has lots of them, tending to be higher priced there, but sometimes you can snag one that is in great shape.

Congrats on a good find!

My dad has a couple; one with low serial # and matching components and another with higher serial # we get to shoot. I actually want to start shooting it more often because it is just so fun. There is nothing like that clip “pinging” out when empty.

For those of you shooting your Garands, what types of ammo do you like to use? All I have available now is some 150gr soft point ammo but want to find something appropriate for plinking out to 400 yards. Thanks

Thanks, re. ammo…the best price I’ve found is the Greek surplus M2 ball that CMP sells. I bought a can of the stuff in clips and bandos, to get myself a good supply of clips, and another box of the stuff loose.

American Eagle comes in a .30-06 designed for the M1 Garand. Other commercial ammo may, or may not, be good for the rifle. It’s a raging debate in the M1 community, much like .9mm or .45.

When I innocently inquired over at the Garand forum, it brought out a lot of emotion.

Live and learn.

That’s another area where you can spend some time and $$$, finding all the parts to make your Garand a “Correct Grade”. Sometimes you can swap parts here and there to get what you need without spending too much cash. Congrats & enjoy!

I usually pick up a few bandoliers of the greek surplus stuff at the machine gun shoot every year for mine. I bought an adjustable gas plug for mine incase I ever have a need to shoot anything else out of it.
