Very nice! What length rail section did you use for the AFG? Is that a 5"?
I have a 13" TRX-E on my 9mm carbine and have been wanting to try the AFG I bought on it. How well does the AFG match up to the TRX-E - any major gaps?
Thanks “HeavyDuty”, Appreciate it. I used the longer 4" Rail Section that came with the Troy TRX Extreme Battlerail Handguard. Fits great and no exposed rail forward or rear of the 4" section.
The Magpul AFG is Very Comfortable with the Slim/Round TRX-E BattleRail. Something different, Need to get use to shooting with it.
Thank you! I wasn’t sure if it would be stable enough on the 4" rail or if I should swap the 4" out for a 5" instead. It looks like a great fit.
My 9mm is the only gun I have that makes sense to try the AFG on. I tried holding it on my carbine handguards, and I didn’t like it - too close. IMO it needs a straight-arm fit to work right.
Thanks for posting the pics, I’ve been thinking about building an upper almost just like that. I have a middy upper now and a slightly longer foreend would help with grip and gear placement, and that 13 inch rail should give me all that.
How was assembling the upper, specifically the rail? What tools did you use?
Barrel Nut Installation Wrench/Tool is included with Troy Ind.'s TRX Extreme. Last time I checked the VTAC Extreme doesnt come with, but that could have changed. I’d call Viking Tactics ahead to see if that has changed. “JFreuler”, I believe/assume, used a DPMS Barrel Nut Wrench without issue.
Note: If you choose to go with the Troy TRX-E version, I recommend to use the “Included” Troy Ind. wrench in “one” direction to torque or switch over to loosen. Of course this applies to any barrel nut & wrench.
Nice build. I’d say move that front sight to the front and put the light mount behind it. Adjust the light in the mount to keep the button where you want it.
When you see people put lights in front of their front sights it’s because they are Surefires and the ambi controls work best there. If your light is just in an offset mount you might as well just move it all to a better layout.
Thanks for the input/advice on the light location. Original setup had a Surefire X200B forward of the front sight, but decided to switch out to the setup in the pic. Wearing gloves I could not get a good/confident feel of the controls on the X200B.
I played around with the current setup location front & back, but with how I hold my rifle this works best. I did move the VLTOR/Surefire 6P one slot rearward & now sits right up with the front sight. Its a lot more comfortable hitting the tailcap button with my support hand thumb now. I really only use the stub VFG as a reference point/stop, may change that out to a hand stop thing later.
Have a "Surefire SR07 Pict. Rail Mount Switch Coming " that I will mount topside.

Very nice looking build. I was interested to see that you want back to the stubby VFG from the AFG. I had to shoot with my AFG for awhile before I really got it down, but now I wouldn’t change back.
