Just picked up my first shotgun today, a Mossberg 590 A1. I installed a mesa tactical 4 shell side saddle and cant wait to shoot it. Does anyone have any other upgrades that should be done to this? I was thinking of trying to mount a light somewhere, I have a surefire g2 light already so a mount for that would be perfect. (I can’t afford the surefire fore-end mount). I would like to make it a pistol grip for more controllability but the top mounted safety of the Mossbergs has me hesitant to try that.
Oil it up and shoot about 100 bird shot loads to break it… Also, Get a bunch of different buck shot and slugs to shoot and see how it patterns. Once you have an idea of the load it likes and where it patterns, buy a bunch of those…

Once you have it for awhile take a look at a reduced LOP stock 12-13" and a trinuim bead. It is just about everything you need and nothing you don’t. Skip the pistol grip stock unless you REALY, REALY have a requirement for it. Their are severel options for to get a light mounted I’ll try to post some picks latter.
I have several configurations of the 500/590 with mostly 13" LOP stocks. I also own what is likely the worlds most expensive Mossberg 500 and about everything in between so have a fairly broad perspective, but pleanty of other can offer you lots of sage advise.
Will do, hoping to get to the range this weekend. It is the 20" i believe, with the 8 shell capacity in the tube + 1 in the chamber… I have heard LOP a lot, is that the distance from the butt of the gun to the handguard? I’m a fairly tall guy at 6’1" but a shorter distance there would be nice. I have to extend my support arm almost all the way to get a good grip on it.
Length of Pull (LOP) is the distance from the face of the trigger to the butt of the stock, measured along the same line (parallel to) the bore.
With regard to your desire for controllability with a pistol grip, you might gain maneuverability, but controllability and versatility will suffer…IMO.
You could try the pistol grip/stock combo. I always liked it. It allows for easier momentary one handed control but you still have the stock. Speedfeed makes good stocks like this.
Ok, here are some options for mounting a light on your shotgun:
Rail mounted light. Works better on Mossbergs then Remingtons due to the longer forends. Should see some qualtiy pictures soon of something similure:

The MOD-C is the version I am most interested and as soon as I get one in I will try to get some photos of it up. It will be on a 18" 500 “Tactical” which uses the 590A1 mag tube and barrels along with a S&J Hardware +2 extension.

what are you going to use the shotgun for? home defense, hunting, clays? Depending what you want to do with it there are some things you might want to change
I have never liked the pistol grips stocks for mossbergs, due to where the safety is located. You have to remove your firing grip to disengage the safety. I do, however, agree with reducing the length of pull to around a 13" stock. Much more comfortable to me.
Here is another option to mount a light. Laser-Lyte TriRail with a scope mount to hold the light. It gives you the option of mounting the light at 3, 6, or 9 o’clock.
The TriRail can be had for less than $30 and the Weaver scope mount can be found at WalMart for $6.
The front sight is a Marbles Tritium. I also have the Hogue 12"LOP buttstock and Hogue forend.
I would not buy a pistol grip for your shotgun. Check out some of the turkey guns at your local gun shop. I could not operate the slide release well at all. It would be ok for a Remington.
