My first post and first AR

Well I guess you can tell this is my first post. I am a couple of weeks away from having the funds for a new bushmaster patrolmans carbine. http://academy.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/outdoors/hunting/center_fire_rifles&start=0&selectedSKU=0345-00329-2252 Now I have a few questions and I have about as much AR knowledge as Rosie Odonald. First I expect to buy to go with it:

A good cleaning kit: I have been reading alot about cleaning the ar and keeping it lubricated. Does anyone use a kit specifically made for the AR?

Sure fire g2 with maybee a viking tactics mount

Vertical foregrip: I hear the Tango Down grip is very popular.

A flip up rear BUIS: Not really sure which one yet.

A 4 rail handguard: Does anyone have any experience with command arms? I saw they were cheaper than everyone else but they are connected to Fobus and I love fobus paddle holsters. Everyone of my pistols have one. I don’t want to cheap out and buy something that is gonna break but this riffle will probably just sit in the safe and go to the range and look cool.

EOtech: I have an old red dot to throw on there until I get everything else and then I can get the eotech. This seems to be 1 of the top 2 hands down favorites for optics.

Does anyone see any snags in my plans or do they seem o.k? Also I wanted to emphasis on the command arms question. Is there that much of a difference between there handguard and the more expensize ones?

Thanks in advance I can’t wait to learn alot from you guys.

Cleaning kits are something I don’t get worked up, but thats just me. I am just as happy using a mix up functional items as I am anything else. It works, its clean, thats what matters.

The G2 is a pretty cheap, yet effective light, and the same can be said for the Viking Tactics mount.

For the VFG, I would strongly recommend you try a few before you buy one. There are a lot of different ones, and hand size can make a pretty large difference in what does or doesn’t feel good for you. Make sure you get a quality one as I’ve seen plenty of them snap in classes, which is better them seeing them snap on the street.

There are a lot of quality BUIS available, the below thread needs to be updated with a few more offerings, but it should give you a lot of pictures and some basic info on each of them.

No hands on time with the Fobus rail, but I’ve seen plenty of their holsters destroyed. Its a matter of what your intended use is. The Daniel Defense Omega rail is a simple drop in FF rail that is high quality, but I’m not sure of the price difference between the Fobus/ CAA and the DD Omega. At a certain point, quality comes into play, and a higher price for a major component may be worth saving a little longer for.

I use Eotechs on my duty weapons, and I enjoy them. Other people prefer Aimpoints, but both are high quality optics.

USGI magazines are worth getting, but the Magpul PMAG are showing themselves to have a higher durability level, plus they come with an antitilt follower. They are good to go, and well worth taking a look at.

My first suggestion is to go into the AR technical forums and do some reading. All of your questions have been addressed one way or another. You may not like some of the answers to your questions, but they come from very experienced individuals. I recommend about a 2 hour sitdown, especially on some of the stickied threads and take some notes.

Welcomes to the forum, and good luck with your AR!

Sorry if this was the wrong place. I will go check out the tech forum. Thanks.
