My First Complete Build - I learned a lot

So here goes my first major post here. First, let me just be up front and tell everybody that I am still fairly new to the AR/M4/“Assault”/Black Rifle. So new in fact I am still trying to figure out all of the nomenclature. However, the wealth of information here gave me the confidence that I could do this. I am a tinkerer by nature and a gun lover so it only felt natural for me to give this a go. Plus, I like things customized to my personal preferences.

As far as why I choose the parts. I can’t say exactly. Mostly what started off as picking aesthetically pleasing (to me) and highly regarded as quality turned into this build. I did lean towards something that I thought could be used for running local 3 gun matches too. Now that it is done, I question myself on that aspect of the build. I haven’t weighed it but it is a pig compared to some of my other rifles. It’s not for everyone for sure. It’s what I thought I wanted out of the many parts available, so I built it. I guess if I’m being honest, it was more self indulgence and having a “spare no expense” mentality as I selected parts. After completeing it, I am happy with how it turned out for a first complete build. Having said that, I think I would focus more on solid built quality and lighter weight next time around. I would also focus more on bang for your buck parts.

Upper:
Seekins Precision iRMT3 - Doing this again, I’d go with a “regular” upper and not something proprietary so the rail could be changed in the future if needed/wanted.
Seekins Precision iRMT3 (3 Gun) Rail 15"
Noveske 13.7" Infidel Barrel with LoPro Gas Block - this was the shortest I could go and stay compliant while getting the look I wanted.
Noveske KX3 - I wanted the look this Flash Suppressor would give with the 15" rail - honestly, I thought it would look cool and still function properly. I know these are really best served on a short barrel and 13.7" is pretty much the threshold from the research I’ve done.
Raptor CH
Ranier Arms BCG

Lower:
Seeking Precision Billet Ambi Lower - this was the foundation that I started because I thought it looked cool - again, being honest.
Spike’s LPK - less what I used that came with the Seekins Lower
Magpul UBR - I went with this to help counter balance the weight up front. It does the job nicely. Originally I was going to go with a Mako Group SR25 looking sniper stock with some paracord wrapped around part of it. I just like the look and feel of it when shouldered. Plus adjusting the cheek weld is nice too. I kinda have long arms so the length didn’t deter me. However when I got the upper built and realized how heavy it was, I decided on the UBR.
BCM Mod 1 Grip
Battle Arms Development - Selector and Pins
Geissele - SSA at first and moved to a SD3G - I just wanted to try them both and haven’t really decided on which one to leave in it.
Wolff Standard Spring - because the UBR has a proprietary tube, I could’t go with a Vltor A5 kit. (I don’t know enough about what works in what to mix and match, yet).
Standard H Buffer - still haven’t ran enough different ammo to see what it likes.

Custom:
KX3 was pinned and welded by a local gunsmith. One of the only few things I wasn’t set up to do myself.
Custom Cerakote by a local shop as well done in Tactical Grey. I didn’t want to go too far off the reservation with color but again, self indulgence and wanting it to be “different”. Part of me wishes I would have left it black.

Irons/Optics:
Aimpoint H1 4moa I bought from a member here.
I am thinking I’ll go with the new Magpul Pro BUIS once I can find a good price on a set. I like them because they seem really small and tuck away nicely. I do like to roll with the irons flipped up though.

I welcome any and all feedback. I want to know where I screwed the pooch or did well. Thanks to all of the contributors here for the knowledge and insight!

With today’s trend toward smooth cycling lightweight rifles this could be a clear cut example of “spend some time with the platform” before diving in to a custom build, but then hey…what do I know:confused: It seems this setup is confused exactly what it’s role is.

The components you’ve selected seem high quality. But I’m scratching my head trying to figure out what you’re trying to get out of this build.

You have the foundation of a precision rifle with the excellent barrel and SD3G trigger. However, the 4moa dot won’t make it easy for you to take full advantage of the performance of the Infidel barrel. Also, the Infidel barrel is relatively heavy in comparison to many of the new lightweight CL barrels. If you’re carrying extra weight in the barrel and stock ideally you should expect some performance benefit from it.

If I had a Noveske Infidel barrel and SD3G trigger I’d be focused on creating a precision rifle with at least a good 1-4x/1-6x scope. Your rifle should be fed high quality ammo to really enjoy the benefit of all its capability.

I agree with both of you and hear what y’all are saying.

I started off looking to build a precision rig. I got carried away with all the fancy schmancy stuff. I do have a 2moa T1 I’ve thought about putting on it. Also contemplated a 1-4 or 1-6 Vortex maybe.

I went by a buddies shop today that has a good digital scale. It weighs in at 8.2 lbs with Aimpoint.

Interesting. And my BCM 13" KEY MOD upper with sights, light and Aimpoint T1 came in about a full 1lb. lighter.

Did you use the UBR stock, IG? If not, that could account for much of the weight difference

Looks like it could work as a 3 gun limited rifle if you change the muzzle device

You did choose some pretty heavy components though… I think the UBR is almost necessary to balance the SP3R which is heavy on its own not counting the Noveske barrel

If you did another build in the future I would change the barrel to an 18" rifle length gas and use that for 3 gun with a different optic, then use the Noveske barrel and aimpoint for a light weight carbine build
