I had the good fortune to be able to talk face to face with Grant at G&R Tactical today. I think I learned more in that hour than I have in the last month. I walked out with a complete upper consisting of 16",1/7 Daniel Defense pencil barrel BCG and, Carbine length gas system with a VLTOR low pro gas block on an M4 receiver with 9" Troy TRX rail. This wound up mounted on a DD Lower receiver that started as a bag of parts with G&R’s lower parts kit, trigger group and Magpul furniture(UBR stock, MOE grip and trigger guard) all in your basic black.
After about an hour of trying to remember which spring went where my 25 year old armorers training came rushing back(I only had to dismantle and start over twice) and my first personal black rifle came together. I’ll be mounting MBUS sights and a no name reflex 1x optical on it till I can pic up an Aim Point and magnifier.
I’ll get some pics up as soon as I can. Now to tear it all down for a thorough cleaning and lube job.
that has to be satisfying for all parties involved. customer comes in with questions, comments, concerns. sales folks answer all said questions, comments, concerns. sale made and everyone is happy. why can’t everything be this easy?
I wish all my sales were sales were as nice and easy as the this one, but that is rarely the case for two reasons. They are:
Dealer is a village idiot and only wants to sell the item that he either has the most of or makes the most profit off of.
Customer is a village idiot and wants a DPMS/BM or Oly.
In this instance, the customer had an idea on what he wanted, and I was able to show him some other options that he was open minded enough to consider. I kept the build within his desired budget and cut a few dollars off my normal prices to make it happen. He is satisified and I am too.
I’ll say that walking into a gun store, for the uninformed, can be a very frustrating experience. To say that it’s a different kind of retail customer service/sales experience is an understatement.
I’m not exactly “uninformed” I’ve been shooting the M16A2 in the military for close to 25 years. I carried one in Iraq thought it didn’t see any real action. And I had done a good bit of research on the modern offerings in the AR world. I also have a small arsenal of “civilian” sporting rifles and handguns. I’m definitely not a newbe to guns in general just to the M4 world.
That being said, Grant did go above and beyond for me.

I bore sighted and co-witnessed the buis and optics last night. I hope to get to the range for zeroing and familiarization next week.
I was going to expand on this to include anyone like you, whether it’s someone who’s served, recently or decades ago, or whether a seasoned sportsman buying his first AR/mil rifle, or someone with limited exposure who is still smart enough to have easily understood, grasped fully and remembered a compliment of firearms knowledge and said skillsets.
So when that person walks in a store, is he being rightly served when he’s told that “these are all good ARs” and you’ll be well served if you pick any one of them.
We’ll gladly have ya! We need a decent gun shop in DFW with knowledgeable people and something other than Fudd gear.
And this is why my non-gun friends take me shopping with them when I finally talk them into buying a gun and starting to carry. Keeping track of what the various stores in the area have offered, all of my friends would have ended up with either a Taurus or an XD for a carry piece. As it is, the only two that didn’t take me shopping with them… bought XDs. Two have bought ARs first and then asked my opinion and both got RRAs. I’m not the smartest guy in the world - but I research everything and have a really accurate BS meter most of the time…
Nice rifle! Out of curiosity, why did you choose to go with the UBR on a build that seems to emphasize light weight? I personally would have thought the Magpul ACS would be a better fit (and saved you $75-100 or so), and shaved off another .5lbs.
I went light on the upper so I could add a bit of weight on stock. The UBR is a very solid piece of furniture and the extra weight in the butt makes for a very balanced overall feel. I like the having the option of extending or retracting the stock but will, in all likelihood never be in body armor when shooting so I didn’t see a need to give up stability for a nice to have option. The UBR is the best of both worlds, at least in theory. Since I was able to add it and stay in budget, I went for it.
There are a few things on this that build that were not in my original plan. Primarily because I did not know they were available when I went to see Grant. I had originally expected to get the DD lower from Grant and order a BCM upper from their website. Even then I was not able to get exactly what I wanted in an upper as BCM is almost completely out of stock on everything! After talking my needs/wants over with Grant I decided to go with the pencil barrel in carbine length gas system because it was available and I did not feel that the middy would offer any major improvement for me. The XTR hand guard is very nice. It fits my hands perfectly and is an upgrade from the Midwest Industries fore end that is available from BCM right now(that is to say available on a BCM complete upper).
