Bought my first 1911 today. I got the Ruger sr1911. It passes the eye test at least to me, but the true test will be tom at the range. I know these are new but would like to hear any pro’s and con’s. I went with Ruger because of their history and it’s 100% made in the USA, also the price was reasonable. I wanted to stay within a certain price range for my first to make sure I like the 1911 platform. Can’t wait to shoot it.
Shooting times has a review, G&A also.
Some other forums had a full review from the Gunsite shoot i believe. Seems to be a good gun. Do YOU like it? Ultimately that is all that matters.
Check out RugerForum.com there are several ongoing discussions you will find helpful.
That depends on the intended application. I can like a High Point to all heck, but it ain’t gonna make it perform in a HD/SHTF scenario.
Awaiting range report.
It passes the eye test
What are the measurable parameters of the eye test?

Well, went and shot the Ruger 1911 today and really liked it. Had a some issues with the slide not going fully forward. I hope it just needs to be “broke in”. Couple times all I had to do is push a little and the slide went fully forward, but also on 2 occasions the round didn’t feed into the chamber and I had to release the mag and pull slide back to dislodge round. I figure its just because it is new and tight. Anybody heard of this with new 1911? Should I be worried? I wasn’t using crappy ammo, it was PMC fmj. The sights are excellent and all the rounds went where I wanted them to. Overall really happy with my purchase.
Did you run the gun dry or lubed wet?
No kiddin?
-tight extractor
-tight chamber
-rough breech face
There’s a stickied thread over at 10-8forums, that goes into the various commonly encountered malfunctions of the 1911, and what may cause them, well worth a look for the 1911 owner/shooter.
Bob
I broke it down, and oiled her up when I got it, before I went shooting today.
Did you clean the gun first and lube it well? Did you try different mags to see if problem persisted?
This!
Buddy shot 300 rounds in his before it cycled reliability
Seemed to happen on both mags. Only mags I have are the two that came with it. I only shot 100 rounds. Plan on going to the range again this weekend and will post again afterwords. I completely broke it down again last night and gave it a good cleaning and oiled it up in all the right spots and left it disassembled for a while to let the oil seep into it. Hopefully this will take care of it. My LGS told me when I bought it if a I have any issues they will take care of it for me so I am not too worried.
Buy yourself some top shelf magazines like Wilson Combat 7rd or 8rd mags (47D) or Chip McCormick 8rd. Powermags.
More sage advice.
Not to demote your concerns But PMC is crappy ammo.
No kidding? Didn’t know PMC was crappy ammo, just use it for target and it has never given me any problems with my Sig 220. I will try some different ammo this weekend. Thanks for all the input.
I haven’t found it to be unreliable ammo, just leaves my weapons very filthy. I think it’s made in Korea or Mexico or both.
PMC is Korean ammo, and you could do a lot worse. It isn’t that bad.
