You didn’t own them, but maybe an unscrupulous FFL you did business with used your info to fraudulently fill out some 4473’s to move some junk guns to some dirtbags.
I am not sure what I would do in that case. Might be wise to hire an attorney because one shouldn’t talk to a Fed for any reason without one.
Didn’t the SCOTUS (or maybe it was the 5th Circuit or something) just rule that a gun is not illegal if it has its serial numbers removed?
Either way, weird situation, Mark. If it were me, I would definitely want to clarify that none of the pistols listed were ever mine, and that the letter is a case of mistaken identity. Though you may want to consult with an attorney before contacting them, you just never know what will or won’t be potentially used against you.
The written response info is in item B on the first page. I think I’ll write a short letter explaining that the property is not mine and I’m filing no petition or claim.
I’d love to understand how something in MO got my name associated. I have no ties whatsoever to anyone anywhere near St. Louis.
Would it be safe to assume this junk is being seized do to some criminal activity??
Seems incredibly odd that they would just mail this the regular mail without any kind of service.
Thanks for posting this but I don’t know if it was a good idea. They now have evidence that you actually received it.
I really don’t understand what this is all about, but there is no way that I would respond directly without a lawyer’s input. It just seems to me that if you send back and say I have no idea about this and they say they have evidence that you do. That they could then get a search warrant to come look for them, and take a look around.
Like I said I don’t understand what this is about, but it almost seems like that perhaps someone with a name similar to yours file reports about stolen firearms and they actually found them and want to return them?
If it is kind of what we are thinking is going on, they think you have or had these guns, and you say that you don’t, how exactly do you prove a negative?
Much wisdom here. I am so glad that I live in a “free” country with “civil rights.”
Somehow MarkM’s name got associated with these guns. If they had no name associated they would file the seizure against the guns themselves, as nominal defendants. If you never, ever owned these guns, it might be worth saying that. But I would let an attorney do it for you, for reasons that should be common knowledge here.
I expect they do the minimum to meet applicable legal requirements.
Don’t think it matters.
They already have these guns in their possession. Search warrant irrelevant. The second page says the guns were seized by FBI St. Louis in 2021.
They aren’t trying to return them, but IF the recipient had a legitimate property interest in the guns, there is a process to try and get them back.
They don’t think he has them now, FBI has them. But somehow his name got associated with them.
I’m curious how MarkM got this letter. The speculation about a dealer wrongly listing him as transferee seems like a risk. There could also be other issues in their tracing. Maybe MarkM’s full name is similar to some guy in Missouri who did own these.
@MarkM: you should not suffer any harm if you do nothing. However, if it were me, I’d have an attorney friend write a letter saying “Thanks, but my client has never had anything to do with these guns, you may want to check on why you thought he did.”

ding, ding, ding.
Uninvolved and innocent are commodities that you don’t want to squander…
Is it just me or does stuff like this just send chills down your spine? How politically corrupted these three letter agencies seem to have become, basically can manufacture anything they want to create a reason to come ruin someone’s life, most likely based on a difference in ideology.
I’d definitely speak to an attorney about this. The feds aren’t to be trucked with. Even those that are honestly just trying to do their job are just that doing a job and have no vested interest in you, your family…
Is it possible that you were/are a victim of identity theft and are just now finding out. I’ve had friends/family find out they were victims from letter from the IRS about duplicate returns or from disability offices asking for claim clarifications.
Either way as much as I hate to say it a lawyer might be in order.

I don’t care. I’m writing a letter to advise NOT MY GUNS.

A search warrant to look for guns they already have? OK!!

There are other guys in the US with my name. That’s the most likely reason.

I’m not even slightly worried. There’s ZERO chance that I’ve ever seen this junk pile, thus ZERO chance of any way to link me to the garbage. This is approaching 2 years old. If there were any follow up on the Fed’s part, they’d have done it by now. I definitely don’t have any sign of ID theft on the financial front, but I suppose someone I can’t rule it out for other nefarious reasons.
Nah, its just some clerk who isn’t motivated enough to ge the person correct. Government workers you know…I recently had a buddy get NICS rejected because they told him he had felonies on his record when he didn’t. Turns out he was correct and they were wrong, but it was a pretty difficult mess to plow through as he not only lost the NICS check he lost global entry etc…basically anything he had based on his good record was plundered by the dunder heads.
