Here’s a belt fed we built, I call it the 556 LAW (light automatic weapon)…

Any reason to carry around linked ammo is a good reason I suppose.

Cool. How many Shrike uppers have been delivered?

Are there still people waiting on them? I got my deposit back years ago.

We had a guy show up at my local range with one of those. Jealous doesn’t even begin to explain how i feel. Lol

My Shrike is sitting broke right now. Waiting for word from Ares…

What happened ?

I like the low cyclic rate, is this open or closed bolt?

Closed bolt but I’m thinking about maybe trying to do an open bolt conversion. I’m also running a MGI rate reducing buffer, it’s really heavy and the Ares upper seem to like it…

Was doing some short bursts when the gun cycled extremely hard both ways. The bolt closed and the charging handle shot back at my face. I flipped up the feed cover, it never tried to feed another round. I cleared the rifle, had the spent case in the chamber ( not fun to do with no charging handle).
Looks like what happened was the extractor didn’t catch the rim. The action didn’t have enough load on it and cycled back very hard. The roller cam smacked the hoop of my lower really hard. The over speeding action was too fast to try to feed the next round. The bolt closed hard enough that it pushed barrel forward slightly, tight up against the barrel QD pin. When it did this, the small amount of free space between the carrier and the charging handle was removed. It snapped the lug on the charging handle, and it sprung back towards my face. The barrel was stuck in the receiver, I couldn’t depress the QD lever until I tapped the flash hider end of the barrel with a soft face dead blow hammer to move it back slightly. The barrel extension distorted slightly when the malfunction happened and does not come out of the receiver easily any more. My other barrels still slide in and out fine.
The ammo was LC M193. The problem casing didn’t show any signs of excessive pressure, didn’t have an extractor mark in the rim either.
Looks like it just didn’t grab the case and the whole action just went way too fast. I was running on the 2cd smallest gas setting with a H2 buffer.
So, I have a damaged lower (SBR with RDIAS), broke charging handle, damaged barrel extension, the extractor seemed ok but I’m looking for a new extractor-spring-pin.
I notified Ares, just waiting to see what they want to do? I really enjoy my Shrike, took many years to get it, but I do really like it.
The issue was just probably a fluke fail to extract, but I did damage some parts.

How did the roller impact your lower? We’re you using the buffer tube spacer? How did the bolt go forward with that much force? It can’t go forward with any more force than the spring can push it. Hmmmm, let me know what they say. I’ve talked with the owner on an issue I had (I cut the barrel to 12.75") and he was very helpful. Other than a few feeding issues when new it runs like a sewing machine…

Did you have to buy a full auto carrier? It appears that the uppers only ship with a semi carrier for some reason?

I actually run 2 of the spacers. It cycled so hard, that it must have over compressed the bumper on the buffer, causing contact with the hoop area of my lower. That compression must have made it over speed forward as well. Too fast to try to feed the next round and slamming closed very hard.

Hey 99HMC4, what lower are you running on that?

Wow, yeah I guess it could have over pressured the whole system. Keep us informed if possible. I’m running a modified Seekins forged lower (I’m an 02 SOT). I used a Seekins lower cause I cut the mag well and that’s the ONLY lower that doesn’t have any company info on it. And yeah, I cut the barrel down to 12.75" and welded the auto sear trip on the carrier. I’m an Ares dealer and they still wouldnt send it with a auto carrier or short barrel. So I did it myself…

My lower looks almost exactly the same in the magwell, just black instead.
I had to send a copy of a Form 4 DIAS for the carrier and short barrels.

Sorry if I misunderstood, but are you saying you were able to modify an M16 carrier to work? You did a really nice job on modifying the lower!

MSRP on the auto carrier looks to be $750.

Yeah, even though I’m an 02 SOT and a dealer they will not sell a sub 16" barrel upper or auto carrier as a unit. If you want those they HAVE to be bought seperate. I wasn’t going to spent that much so I modified the standard parts…

Not the only one. I’m running an MGI modular lower on mine. Modified the AR mag well so that the mag well itself accepts the SAW box and it also accepts AR mags so I don’t have to use a SAW box adapter.

Had mine since about 2005.
