Here is a list of the parts that I am thinking about purchasing to build my AR with. I would like to get some comments on what you guys think about these parts and what you would change? My goal is to build the best, most reliable and easiest to maintain AR possible.
1-P-415-16-P9X-SF (SA) P-415 Semi-Full-Auto 16" Upper, With Standard Fluting Under Rail System
2-POF Billet P415 (Semi-Auto) Stripped Lower
3-TIMNEY MFG. P/N# 661 DROP-IN, SINGLE STAGE, TRIGGER GROUP FOR “AMERICA’S RIFLE”
4-CTR Carbine Stock M-Mil Spec
5-CTR Rubber Buttpad
6-MIAD - MIssion ADaptable AR15/M16 Grip Full Kit
7-Folding Battle Sight Set (with tool)
8-Full Length XT Rail Panel (3)
9-EOTech 550 Military Holosight Rev. F
10-SureFire M910A-WH Vertical Foregrip WeaponLight, with thumb-screw mount
I assume that a machined billet lower will be stronger (i.e. last longer) than a cast or forged lower. When you say DD rail, what is it, do you have a picture?
Which trigger available is proven and “bulletproof”? The folding sights are simply as a backup to the Eotech. Another reason I was interested in the POF lower is that it has a built in trigger guard that is larger for those wearing gloves. I shoot outside year round so I can see the benefit there. I am definitely more interested in the benefits over the features of any product.
Also as far as Surefire goes, I want a foregrip with light attached and it looks like all of the Surefire’s with this option are 9 volt. Is there another brand I should be looking at?
Several things. The first is precision. The second is flaired mag well (easier mag insertions) and finally finish. The POF billet lowers are the nicest I have ever seen and doubt that I will ever go back to a $90 lower. Its like buying a $800 Kimber and trying to compare it to say the NH Vickers.
The other thing I really like is how billet on billet fit. Meaning putting a VLTOR MUR or VIS on a POF lower is a match made in heaven. The fit between them (without the take down pins installed) was so perfect that a customer asked if I had installed an accuwedge!
POF is working with Daniel Defense on a rail that will work with their gas system.
The military uses a standard, single stage trigger that has about a10lbs trigger pull. This trigger is great for combat, but not for accuracy. The barrels that POF uses are excellent and known for accuracy so I would want to take advantage of that capability.
The only two combat rated triggers (two stage) are the KAC and Geissele (both used by the Army). The new POF trigger appears to be very well done, but is a new product without a track record. I believe this is the point others were trying to make. Knowing Frank, I am willing to bet that this is a quality trigger and built for abuse.
As far as the light goes, it is a good light, but there are down sides to it. They are heavy, expensive and might be too bright for your needs. Before I sell a light to someone, I always have them ID their reqs (meaning how far do they need to illuminate a target). Then go from there.
Have to agree with Bigbore and C4iGrant. For home defense or training purposes, the 6V is the ticket. If you do not want to go with the 6P or G2 Nitrolon, then take a look at the M2 Centurion, a little more beefy. Still the same 65 lumens though.
