very nice rifle I wish I could get into bolt actions for anything other than hunting but for some reason I just cannot
I’m thinking about going in the same direction, a 18" bolt gun. I’m thinking about fluting hte barrel. Nice rifle, great price…
very cool rifle! I have always wondered about using devcon to bed the action. I’ve heard people use it but wondered if it’d be any harder than brownells accraglass.
That is inspiration for broke people of all ages! And that is the same way I built my 308, piece by piece over for a year. Good job! Looks great!
Awesome job on the rifle. You’ll be very happy with that LaRue mount (i have their 20moa on my 700).
If the budget allows at some point might go back to them for their super low scope rings as well. They have the added bonus of being quick detachable as well. I’ve got them on mine and the return to zero is flawless.
BTW, what’s the rate of twist on that barrel?
Again, great job!
Devcon plastic steel is used to make liquid shims for leveling production machinery. That shit is tough.
Another product that gunsmiths have never heard about that is also rock hard is Henkel’s Hysol EA9394 epoxy. It would make a superb bedding compound but since it is mostly known only in the aerospace industry, no one uses it for guns.
nice build
short barrels are sexy!!
im woking on new build .223 and debating how short to go.
Just an update to this. I put some rounds through it since I built it, and figured what I liked, and didnt like, and made the appropriate changes.
First off, I found I did not care for the IOR scope. Awesome glass, wrapped in a mediocre scope. Shitty eye box, tunneling at lower powers, mismatched reticle and turrets, etc. I ran across the Midway exclusive Vortex Viper HS Tactical, which is basically a Viper PST without Illum, and with a mildot reticle. It is a Mil/Mil scope, and that is something I wanted to try. I managed to unload my IOR for what I had in it, and pulled the trigger on the Vortex. SO far, I have been pretty happy with it. Its not a S&B, but for me, it works.
Secondly, I could not get warmed up to the HS stock that I had on it. I had played with some Bell and Carlsons, and for the price, I liked them. I bought a Tactical Medalist, and went to cutting. I thined the forearm down considerably, and rounded the edges. I textured the grip, and forearm. For some reason, my epoxy never set up the first go around on the forearm, so I had to redo it. It currently looks like nine kinds of shit, but it works. It will eventually get a retexture, when the stock gets camo’d. I like this stock much better than the HS.
Lastly, I never could get this thing to shoot like I wanted. It shot good, but I never could get into the half MOA territory that I wanted. Close, but no cigar. Typical of factory Remington barrels, this thing had lots of freebore, so much that I could not get close to the lands. I talked to my smith, and he wanted to use me as a guniea pig, again. This typically works in my favor, so I let him have a go.
He pulled the barrel off, set it back, and recut the chamber with a PT&G Tactical match reamer. While he was in there, he blueprinted the action, threaded the barrel, and installed a Atlasworxs DBM that I had bought cheap in a group buy quite some time ago. The whole deal was coated with Sniper Gray Cerakote. Now, I can load even a 155 SMK or Scenar, and get as close to the lands as I want.
I put it on the range today for the first time. I didnt really get a chance to wring it out, but it shows promise. Regardless, even if it shoots no better, I like the way its set up now much better. Eventually, this gun will get a McMillan or Manners, and a .260 tube from Benchmark on it. For now, however, its in a good place for my skill level.

Very nice. That scope is a great scope for the money - probably the best at its price-point. Great work, man!
Nice Build and I just bought a IOR 2.5-10 on the other site to use on my build. Maybe it was yours I do not know. I really like the MP-8 reticle.
I got a Manners T5 with Mini chasis but I am still playing with triggers. If I do not like the IOR I still have a Leupold 3-9 VX-R with TMR I can use until I get something even better but so far with the standard Houge stock, Leupold VX-R Patrol I am shooting well out to 600 yards.
I am basically doing the same thing you are. updating parts when I get money. I traded a gun for the 700SPS and the rest has come from overtime and found an acct with a few hundred bucks I forgot I had.
Why cut so much if you want a 20" why not go for a sps with the 1/10 rifling. Well I guess if you already have it, but why not like a 22" 0r even 24"
Factory remington 20" barrels typically run a normal 175SMK load at 2500-2550.
Yep, That was mine. You will love the scope, the glass is amazing. My eyes have gotten to the point that I simply cant see well enough at 10x for ranging. I gave up a lot in glass for magnification.
I have not chrono’d these yet, still working on loads. Shot some 178 AMAXs yesterday, grouped under .600 on a cold, clean bore, right at .370 on a dirty warm. Gonna see what the 155s do next.
Both of those are very nice builds. Good to see that with patience you can get what you truely want for a deal.
nice!
Very sweet! Budget build may be in order for me!

Nice group man
Great looking build. Thanks for sharing. Hope I can get my SPS Tactical set up in similar fashion in the not too distant future.
Nice build
I have one at gap right now and i am going to build my own “custom” rifle soon.
And…the rifle morphs yet again…
I was never real happy with the B&C. Its a decent budget stock, but its just that, budget. I stumbled across a hell of a deal on a very slightly used Mcrees chassis, and managed to sell my B&C and bottom metal for the decent price, so I jumped on it. In another, unrelated deal, I snagged a set of Nightforce UL rings.
The rifle is now about 90% to where I want it. A decent piece of glass, and a barrel, and its there. For now, its good to go.
