My 1st build and I'm here to be educated :)

I’ve been researching the numerous threads here guys but I’d like some fresh ideas on MFB. I know a few of the items I’ve been looking at but want to make sure I have everything needed before ordering from various sites (Again, I’m new & look forward to your input!):

Loki Weapon Systems
LWSF Rifle Upper - Forged: $469.00
Fail Zero Bolt Carrier Group: $230.00
Bravo Company Lower(G&R Tactical):451.00
includes: Magpul MOE Stock & MOE grip & Asap receiver
Sights: Troy Battlesights, Magpul or…?? Suggestions
Red Dot:
Aimpoint T-1 (4MOA) with LaRue Micro M4 QD Mount(G&R Tactical)
Absolute cowitness $624.00

That’s it for the moment, the Aimpoint will come later but the sights I need to nail down…

Best advice I’ve ever heard about an AR build is to just skip it and buy a factory built gun from a quality maker.

for some reason they tend to be more relaible.

hard to deny the appeal of putting together all the “perfect” parts tho.

It would be helpful to know how you arrived at this list of parts. Without knowing WHY you chose them nobody can really critique whether or not they are likely to meet your needs. Links to specific products, especially which “LOKI” upper you’re considering, would help too.

$451 for a built lower using MOE parts seems pretty steep. Stripped lower + CMT parts kit + MOE stock and grip should be around the low $300s shipped. ASAP plates are one of those parts I bought and tried out on a few rifles and removed for stock plates and 2 pt sling setups afterwards. What length and profile barrel are you planing to run?

OK - first lesson:

Look up the words ‘hear’ and ‘here’ in the dictionary and post an explanation of the differences between them.

I think you need to scrap your list and start over. I will echo what Rob_s stated. What research or critieria did you use when making your choices?

Is there a reason why you can’t get a basic DD, BCM or Colt 6920 and then make changes?

How much experience do you have with the M16 FOW?

Not that the T1 isn’t an awesome optic but you can get some R1s off ebay right now for $339. Unless you specifically need NV there’s hardly a reason to do that. I just picked up one with a Daniel Defense mount for $365 shipped. Slightly used, but so what. Plus Palmetto State Armory is selling MOE lower parts kits for $60 and you can build your lower up and save several hundred dollars unless you specifically want a BCM logo on your lower.

You’re going to be $1800 in this gun, and not knowing what the upper receiver group looks like $469 may or may not be a good price.

Here’s a suggestion:

$544 shipped

$350 shipped maybe?

Get your lower locally. Sell the BCG in that upper and go get your FZ. +$130

And basically you’ve saved $700 by doing this. Pick up a used Larue mount–I see them all the time—or go get one new. You could be into a great rifle for under $1200. Just shop a little.

I like G&R, but Grant’s lower prices are usually a bit high. LMT Complete lowers with a sopmod stock can be found generally for less than that.

At the advice of some i decided to keep it basic to start, and i am going with the Palmetto State armoury package above, and their Stripped lower. 544 + 87 + 15 = 646.00 total and that is shipping and transfer fee.

Sorry guys I forgot to state that my uses would be: Home Defense, Recreation, 3 Gun later on. I have switched around some of my picked parts due to the advice given. I’m continuing researching as well!

I would look into getting the blemished lower. That will save $71 and you probably won’t be able to find the blemish. I would also get the BCM BCG.

If ordering that upper and a stripped lower you are incurring an 11% excise tax listed on PSA’s site. I think it’s absurd but get your lower locally and save yourself $70. Or order it separately, as in the following day.

For the OP:

As far as the lowers go-
One random thing to think about is re-sellability.
I know everyone thinks they’ll be keeping their stuff forever, but who knows where your mindset will be 10 years from now, or what new technological developments may come about.

Apparently the PSA lowers are pretty good quality,(and they just were on sale for $50) but aside from here and a few other places how much do you hear about them?
Not knocking PSA- but it might be worth a few extra bucks to get something a little more recognizable.

That being said- I just put together a couple lowers with their MOE LPK, and MOE stock kit- for the price I was very pleased, and everything worked fine.

Also, FWIW, like some folks here have already mentioned, shopping around a bit will save you some money. Here’s a rundown/cost of the AR I am helping a family member put together:

Spikes Stripped Lower- $80 (AimSurplus, Free Shipping)
PSA MOE LPK- $53
PSA MOE Stock Kit- $80
Noveske QD Endplate -$24 (not needed if you don’t want to run a sling attachment here. Insert your preferred attatchment if you don’t like the Noveske)
Bolt Carrier Group- $130-140 (BCM/DD/LMT. Or find a good deal from a person here :))
BCM Gunfighter Mod 4 Charging Handle- $45 (not necessarily needed- a standard CH can be had for $20+)
Daniel Defense Fixed A1.5 Rear Sight- $65
Daniel Defense 16" Govt. Profile Midlength with Omega X Rail- $655 (Smartgunner- not here yet…:p)
10 Magazines (USGI-Style)- $85

Total:$1,170 -1,227

By taking advantage of various websites’ deals we only paid $8 in shipping (and of course a transfer fee, but this will differ). And obviously, you could save more if you dumped the rail, and went with an MOE handguard (some people are just stubborn:lol:).

I got a blemished lower from BCM this week for $304.00 shipped and transfer fee.
That’s without a stock body and I couldn’t find a blemish.
BUT I have been checking their website pretty much every day for months.

Colt 6920, Daniel Defense, LMT, Bravo Co., Noveske N4.

I haven’t even finished my first build yet, but I think Jellybean is serving up some USDA prime advice. I recently visited Palmetto State Armory’s site and I couldn’t help but get the MOE lower build kit.

Well, I can’t take 100% credit for that- after all it’s just distilled from what I’ve learned so far from here.

I’ve got the PSA lower and MOE build in mine, ran well today. Brass ejected about 2 o clock ten feet away with the basic palmetto state buffer, will have to see where it goes with a new heavy buffer.

Let us know how everything goes! This site has been a god send with my m4 build

swa, are you running a midlength or carbine gas system? I’m using a midlength for my build and asked for an H buffer.

Edit: sorry… thread-jacking

I used most all PSA items for my lower. I went with the CTR stock though. Its much more solid (to me) than the moe. Worth it in my book. I used their lower parts kit with a set screw and JP trigger spring to make the stock trigger a little better. I will eventually get a Geissele SSAE.

I went with a Rainier Arms upper. I really think they make the best bang for the buck upper out there.
Rainier Arms uppers Those prices include bolt carrier group and they are HPI and MP tested. Not to mention the people who work at Rainier are really great to deal with. Very patient and always willing to answer questions.

But to be honest with you… the best bang for the buck right now is this. Larue PredatAR I don’t know how they are making a profit, this is darn near a steal. Heck they even come with a Geissele Two-Stage trigger stock. If this was available when I was building mine, I would have bought this.
