I bought the CMMG lower from a local store for $115 1 week post election and mail ordered the rest of the parts. I managed to pay at or under retail for everything (I’m too stubborn to pay the inflated prices) but the only upper I found in stock was…a bit above my original price intent (to say the least!)
I’m very happy with it so far, it went together easy.
CMMG lower
RRA LPK
KNS pins (only because the hammer pin stuck out about 1/16" when in the J notch…it bothered me)
TD battle grip
VLTOR E Mod stock. I really like the stock, fits tight, feels good and sturdy, good cheek weld (for a collapsible). The rubber butt pad is great and the steel strike insert is a nice touch…for when fracturing a skull is your best option and you don’t wanna crack your plastic stock.
Upper is an LMT MRP CQB Piston with Troy sights.
When my wallet recovers, I’ll add an optic. Probably an Aimpoint ML3 w/ FDE cover of course.
The upper and lower fit very tight (I know it doesn’t really matter) and the finish is a very near match and looks good (any weird spots in the photo is CLP). I read about some people having problems with the MRP upper sticking out on one side or the bolt release hitting it. Mine mates up perfectly and the bolt release is about 1/8" off the reciever.
I like knowing I can switch barrels, calibers, and gas systems fairly easily (if not inexpensively) with the MRP. I guess in the long run there are savings in accessories and optics vs multiple uppers.
Got it from Denny’s, waited 2 days for transit time. I got lucky and was doing a quick check of the boards (different one) before work when he posted he had some in stock in the wee hours of the morning. I debated for about 10 mins, placed the order just before 7 am PST and he was out when I got home from work…I may have got the last one?
I was gonna pull the trigger on a Noveske Recce low pro that day and wait for it. Or, I’d have been happy with a BCM middy or LMT carbine upper. I just wanted a quality upper at normal price…preferably in stock. I got lucky.
Haven’t shot it yet brother. I like the MRP a lot. Price aside, the platform makes a lot of sense. I didn’t care for the piston one way or the other and don’t think it is needed, but it was available in that config. immediately and I don’t anticipate a problem based on other shooter reviews. The piston system is simple and comes out, goes back in easy. The gas vents out front, not into the handguards according to what I’ve read (I can’t tell from looking at it). The bolt is engineered to address carrier tilt.
Very nice, get some FDE PMags.
Heh, I will eventually…I won’t pay extra tho just to have them now…I’ll just wait until supply catches up. I have enough GI mags for now.
I’m also gonna get some Magpul XTM rail covers in FDE, Foliage and OD for the rails.
Close up of the bottom of the piston assy. Note hole under to vent gas.
Piston assy. overview, it comes out with just a push of the detent and a 90 deg. twist.
Rear of BCG. There is a raised pad and a tapered edge at the back where it contacts the receiver extension. I would expect some initial finish wear on the extension right at the detent, then for it to stop since the edge is beveled and the pad keeps the BCG from tilting further. This jives with shooter reports.
BCG has one piece gas “key” or whatever the part is called for a piston system.
