Muzzel breaks/Comps

First off… is there a diffence in a muzzlebreak or a comp? or is it just different names?

I’m in the market to put a muzzle break/comp to reduce the recoil on my Colt MT6601 20" HBAR… Any recommendations on to brand/style? I dont care about the loudness, looks, color finish or price. I just want one that is of good guality and will serve its purpose to the fullest… I’ll take any comments (pros, cons) or recommendations. NO JP PRODUCTS

THNAKS GUYS!!

My favorite is the Flatland Forge F2 Comp that’s on my 3gun rifle.

They are two different things but most modern muzzle devices combine the two. A comp works by venting gas upwards to eliminate muzzle climb while not mitigating recoil. A muzzle break has a front baffle and vents gas to the sides and slightly to the rear to dampen the felt recoil. Combine the two and there is little climb and very little felt recoil.

What is best is very subjective and totally dependent on what you want out of the device. Some are outstanding at totally reducing recoil and muzzle climb but are totally obnoxious when it comes to flash and more importantly sound. IMHO the PWS flash suppressing comp is the best all around muzzle device currently available.

In order of personal preference:

DNTC Flash Suppressing Comp (Suppresses flash, allows for mounting of Gemtech HALO)

PRI/MSTN QC Brake (Low concussion for a dedicated brake)

Holland QD (my unit uses these, very effective)

Surefire brake (obviously great if you use the SF can)

I like brakes, I have never really noticed a blinding flash with green tip or MK262 in combat usage. Anything to help me get rounds down accurately and quickly is great. Ammo definitely plays a role in this as we all know. I have used the OPS SPR can brake as well, but I don’t prefer it solely as a brake since it didn’t feel like it did a lot to keep the gun stable. Brakes are not for everyone or every situation, but they do make a difference if you use one.

Well sound isnt an issue… I just want to reduce the recoil as much as possible for accuracy. This rifle will not have optics added it will stay with irons and i’ll be shooting 100-200 yards just puching paper going for the best groups i can. I think a “totally obnoxious” one won’t be a problem because there will be nobody to bother but myself and a buddy. If a “totally obnoxious” break will meet my needs can you recommend one for me? A link would be great. Flash hider is out of the question because i’m in NY. Thanks!

How is that working for you? Is there a real noticable difference?

For rapid shooting, they make a big difference. Think going from a regular M4 to a 10/22…that’s what the Holland QD brake did for me when I used it in conjunction with a prototype buffer someone made for us. I don’t feel recoil.

M4Guru,

Do you have a link for the Holland QD brake? I did a google search but all I found were various discussion forums.

Thanks,

Jason

For competition there a huge difference vs using an A2 flash hider/comp.

The only better brake/comp I’ve ever shot on a rifle was a JP ‘recoil eliminator’ or ‘Tank’ brake. Mine works quite well. I can keep all the rounds on a 9"x12" plate at 50yds as fast as I can pull the trigger. The reticle rises slightly but mostly just wobbles a little. It’s a midlength RRA bbl and I use a JP Low Mass carrier and a standard CAR buffer and standard rate chrome silicon buffer spring.

I have a Holland on a 6 lb .308 bolt gun, it recoils less than a .223. My 10 yo son loves it!

I do have a somewhat better trigger. I bought a new Colt lower to go with my MT6601 20" HBAR upper. I dont know the lowers model # but here is what the invoice reads:

LE W/ INTERNALS… COLT L/E ONLY RECEIVER W/ INTERNALS
“COLT’S LAW ENFORCEMENT CARBINE”
1 499.00 499.00T
SA06005 HAMMER, LOW MASS (0.170) 1 52.50 52.50T
64224 HAMMER SPRING, LIGHT (SPK94774) BLUE 1 8.00 8.00T

I will not be doing any rapid firing, I will take my time in between shots. I will be mostly at a bench, rarely standing. I will be shooting 50-200 yards. I will only be using the A2 sights. Noise will not be an issue where I shoot. I still firmly believe that the less my rifle moves after/while pulling the trigger, the better results I will see.

I have seached for some and hoping you guys can help me choose or recommend another one. All based on the above info. Thanks!!

  4. FSC556 by PWS
I can’t even find this one (from top of this thread)

  5. Flatland Forge F2 Comp
Can’t find this one either, but hear good things.

With the low amount of recoil already present in .223 and the amount of reduction you’d get from any of them, it would almost be splitting hairs. The PRI and PWS brakes are pretty unobtrusive and work great.

FWIW, I have the same rifle you do pretty much (Sabre Defence A2) and I went with the PWS FSC556 unit. After all my research, it was what I deemed superior as it has less flash than an A2 hider, yet effectively controls muzzle-rise very well and recoil decently from what I have seen/heard. When my rifle arrives early next week/late this week, I will post up a review of my own.

M4, Have you shot that comp at night or reverse roll over prone?
Im curious if you have a flame thrower there.

The Holland & the PRI/MSTN look very similar, is there a noticable difference?

Not really. The MSTN has a couple more little holes on it, but I couldn’t feel a difference in recoil reduction.

I have fired them at night with 75gr TAP, EBR sunbsonic, 262 and green tip and have not been hindered by the flash, even under NVGs. I can’t speak for other types of ammo.

In rollover prone in Iraq it kicked up some dust, but so did my KAC hider. I have never used ROP other than training, but from practicing at the range it would be dirty but do-able.

Holy smokes Batman…

I pulled a MSTN/PRI muzzle comp out of my armorers bag today. It’s been in there for over a year, I just never tried it out.

Mounted on a M4A1 with a NF 2.5-10x, WOW, no muzzle rise, auto into dime size holes @ 10m. Very noticable difference as compared to a stock m4a1 with a2 muzzle device. Awesome for shooting while moving.

A bit louder, esp if on side of shooter. I’d never have one on a dedicated CQB gun, but this comp sure has some applications.

So what WOULD you put on say a 10.5-11.5 upper?

I’ve finally got out to shoot my mid-length build that I’ve rebuilt, for the second time, to be somewhat of a 3-gun type. Swapped out the M4 stock for an A2 rifle one, JP VTAC, low powered scope, and added the Stag comp just to see if I would like a brake as it is only $8. Watching through the 1.5-4.5 scope there was very little muzzle rise (could see my hits through the scope with those orange peel targets) and recoil was reduced substantially. My rifle is pretty heavy for its size but I was still surprised at how little recoil there was. I eventually would like to get a Flatland Forge or PRI/MTSN type brake, but the stag comp works much better than I expected so I think I may keep it. The only thing I don’t like about it is whatever finish they use is very thin. It is also very loud. A few friends showed up to shoot a few new guns they had purchased, but without ear plugs. At first I refused to let them shoot my rifle. After getting tired of their whining I caved. One shot later, they refused to shoot it again. I bet they won’t forget ear plugs again though.

I am not sure how much reduced recoil can be attributed to the rifle type buffer system, stag comp, or just the weight of the rifle but I am happy with the way it turned out. Definitely need a Larue SPR-E scope mount though.f.
