I am looking at buying a suppressor for an M&P 9mm. I have several 1911’s and I am considering a .45 M&P as well. My question is this: Should I go with the 9mm can or go with a .45 can for use on both? Has anyone done any videos of a .45 can on a 9mm host? If so is there a big difference in db levels between the two? Any suggestion on best can for this setup would be appreciated. Thank you.
I went with a .45 can for both, I don’t have it yet (waiting on BATF) so I can’t tell you how its working out. From what I’ve read the better .45 suppressors will be very close in performance on a 9mm to the 9mm version. I figure if I’m not happy with the performance on the 9mm I can get one of those later.
Check out silencerco’s videos on youtube, they test their osprey 45 can on a 9mm. IIRC the 45 can was only a couple DB louder than the dedicated 9mm can. It was close enough that I couldnt justify spending another 900 for a dedicated 9mm rig.
.45 on both. It works great and not a huge difference in weight.
Bought a 9mm can a few years back. Now I wish I would’ve spent the extra money on a silencerco 45 and their extra adapters. You get the most for your money that way. And it’s well documented that it performs well with 9 & 40.
Plus, that can looks great on a 1911!
I have a osprey 45, use it on my 1911 and I just picked up a M&P9 and dropped a storm lake barrel in it, doing the same thing you are. You lose 2db if I’m not mistaken, but I’ll take that over paying for another can ![]()
Thanks for the responses guys. I am going to go with the .45 and save some money.
That is probably the best decision. The only thing you will probably gain from a dedicated 9MM suppressor is length, very minimal weight (with a titanium setup), and maybe 1 or 2 decibels.

So,Osprey or Ti-Rant? ![]()
Osprey is the only one I can find available right now. I plan on having two pistol cans so I might try the Tirant next.
Check out silencershop.com I’ve had great luck with them.
As my funds aren’t unlimited, I went with a 22 can (have it), 45 can and 7.62 can (both about 10 weeks until approval).
Sure, some suppression is lost but for my use it is worth it to be able to suppress my 9s and 45s, as well as 7.62 and 5.56 rifles.
FWIW, I considered the Osprey and Tirant45, went with the Tirant because it will be run under a rail on a 9MM AR from time to time. SilencerCo products are great though, I have their original Sparrow 22LR and it’s awesome on pistols and rifles.
I have a 45 TiRant in process right now. I went back and forth on the 9mm as well, because I’m vested in 9mm autos. I really don’t know how I’ll feel about it, but if it’s hearing safe dry on my 1911, I’ll be happy. They say it should be. Performance of the TiRant 45 on 9mm hosts is supposed to be as good or better as the 9mm TiRant on 9mm hosts. It’s just a little longer.
Plus the TiRant 45 will be a sweet candidate for a 44 Rem Mag handi rifle or ruger bolt action. Them flat nose 44 bullets put the thump on pigs.
hey there, would love to see how that works out. have you done any research? 45 ACP can with a 44special works great, but the guidance I got was that 44mag is too hot for 45acp cans. could be wrong, so maybe you got different data.
If I had to do it all over again, I would have only bought three cans: a SWR Spectre, an AAC SDN6, and an SWR Octane 9 HD. Those are the ones that get the vast majority of trigger time. I an shoot all 22 up to 5.7fn through the Spectre, 9 and 300 blackout (subs) through the octane, and all my 556 and 308s through the SND6. Wasted a bunch of money on other cans that sort of sit around.
I just got my TiRant and it is indeed hearing safe with 45 ACP. I was amazed, you can scarcely hear the report, the action is what you hear. Re: 44 magnum with a TiRant, even though the cartridge is burning a lot more powder at higher pressure than a 45 ACP the gasses have done a lot more expanding at the end of a 16 + inch rifle barrel than the end of a 4 or 5 inch pistol barrel. I am speculating the gas pressure of 44 magnum at the end of a 16 inch barrel is lower than the gas pressure of a 45 ACP at the end of a 4 or 5 inch barre and if you use a TiRant on a rifle you are told to use a spacer that blocks the piston. So, with a 45 TiRant, what do you have to do to run it on a 40 or a 9? New piston?
I got the .45 Osprey and the Sparrow ordered! Let the waiting begin. ![]()
Good man! Exact same two I ordered, 2 more months and I should be able to take mine home, you’ll absolutely love them ![]()
