I met a nice gentleman at my local range yesterday. He was shooting an MSAR AUG with Leupold prismatic sight.
Since I am considering getting one, I talked to him for a bit. He said that “MSAR has great customer service” since he had to send his rifle in for a lot of repairs. According to him he has “enough spare parts to build another rifle” and MSAR was kind enough to give him a free E4 stock for AR mags.
Since I mainly shoot Wolf, I asked him how it runs. He said that often, there is failure to feed when set to “Normal” gas setting. He also cleaned the rifle every few magazines.
I asked him to shoot it and loaded 10 rounds of Wolf 55 gr in USGI 20 rnd mag.
After the first round, there was failure to feed, but after chambering, the rest of the magazine went without a hitch.
The rifle also would not hold open on the last round.
I also didn’t care for the Leupold prismatic. While the idea is nice - use it with or without batteries, I felt like using a regular rifle scope, and I had to get eye relief “just right” in order to avoid the black shadow.
Later on, he said that Wolf started working fine in his rifle after switching the gas setting to “dirty”.
I am curious about the experience others have shooting Wolf through MSAR and Steyer AUG variants. And also how is the E3 (NATO) stock compared to the original one.
Cheap ammo is typically underpowered so, a “dirty” gas setting is often needed on a lot of different rifles. Use 5.56 NATO spec ammunition and you won’t have this problem.
A rifle that is broken in will work better with underpowered ammunition then a new tight rifle.
I have not seen Hornady available locally and Wolf runs fine through my rifles.
I would love to hear experiences of people with Steyer/Sabre AUG’s and Wolf.
I have never run wolf so can’t comment on the ammo. I can comment on the E4 vs STG556 stock. I have both, I like both. I like the steyr style mags but it is nice to be able to run standard ar15 mags in the E4. The E4 has more rail mounting points than you’ll ever possibly need. The grip has a better texture and the trigger seems more crisp in the E4 vs. the STG. However, I actually prefer my STGs. I like running the 42rd mag, I have a drop rail on one of them which is great for my OTAL, and the height of the rail seems a little better for me on the STG. That said, with the new forward rail options that can be run on either the STG or the E4, I would very much like to install one and run a gas block height flip up front with stanard height rear. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet, but that may change any day. I’m still talking myself into it as I don’t want to give up my forward vert grip and I do not like the look of the full length or stubby VFGs on the forward rail. It is also just an inch too short for an AFG.
I’ve never used Wolf in my Steyr AUG A3, so I cannot comment from personal experience, so take this for what its worth… But when I have discussed it with people who I consider to be quite knowledgeable about the AUG, the consensus is that Wolf is okay if the AUG A3 is broken in and on “High” gas setting. This is supported by the few accounts I read on the web…
This sums it up for most users. If you are going to run Wolf, wait until your rifle is “broken in”, and then run the regulator on the “high” gas setting. Also, remember to clean the chamber well before switching back to brass cased ammo. There will be a buildup of residue about .5" ahead of the base of the cartridge in the chamber due to the steel case ammo not expanding like brass.
I shoot steel case ammo in my AUG style rifles all the time, but I follow these precautions.
