I have been using my Pro-X’s for a few years now and have only recently come across a problem. When shooting either of my SBR’s unsuppressed, the concussion of the initial shot turns the electronics off. I did not have this problem before when shooting my SBR’s unsuppressed. I also don’t have this problem with other guns (the ones that don’t have the concussion like a SBR’ed AR) such as bolt, 16" AR’s, suppressed rifles or handguns. I can turn them right back on by pushing the button but I am curious why this is happening. Does anybody have any insight to this? Anybody else experience this problem?
I’ve considered changing the batteries but didn’t think that would be the problem since I can use them for hours at a time without problem unless shooting an unsuppressed SBR.
Sounds like an electronics problem to me. Email your phone number and this description of the problem to info@msasafety.com and they will call you back.
sounds like the beginning of a battery box problem. SRS Tactical just replaced the box in mine and said it was a common issue. at first they would randomly shut off and after a while they just quit.
i didn’t even try for warranty as mine are almost 5 years old and are used at least once a week for hours at a time in all kinds of weather…sweat, dirt, etc. i chalked it up to wear and tear maintenance but if they were newer or had less use on them i would have tried for warranty work.
Mines is six yrs old…and it survived a vehicle fire overseas.
They warranted it and sent it back…good as new.the cover is still battlescarred…whixh I like.
I sent an email, actually 2, to the address listed in this thread and have yet to hear anything back. I am looking for clarification as to whether they will repair my earmuffs under warranty at no cost before I send them in. Has anyone on here who has sent their units in for repair had to pay for the repairs. Should I just assume that they will fix them under warrant and send them in? Is it strange that no one at MSA has gotten back to me?
armed_zebra send me an email: eric@greygrouptraining.com and I will go straight to MSA with your problem. I have been able to get warranty problems cleared up with a bit of quickness in these situations.
I noticed that mine started to go off randomly at a carbine class two weekends ago and again in a shoot this past weekend. At the class, I assumed it was battery related. I had changed the batteries before the class, but it was really cold out and figured that it was causing some problem. Then when I came back home and had a shoot in 80-90 degree weather, I noticed that my ear pro would be off at random times. I thought ok, maybe I’m turning it off between strings, but I think something is going on with the electronics.
I’ll contact MSA and see what they say. Sounds like I shouldn’t be holding my breath.
I have a set of Supreme Pros (not Pro-X) that recently crapped out on me during a course. They’re about 5 years old, and outside the 3 year warranty. I’m wishing I’d found some of these threads earlier, or I would have sent it over to SRS Tactical. I sent mine off to MSA, and I’m looking at a minimum of $220 for repair, and they’re sending them off to Sweden. Sounds to me like it’s the battery box issue, since the random cutting out started happening right after I swapped batteries.
I realize that it’s beyond the 3 year warranty period, but I haven’t abused these, and it seems like they should hold up better considering they spend a lot more time in my range bag than on my head. Now I’m taking it up the shorts to get them repaired for close to the cost of a replacement unit. The MSA folks are nice and very responsive on the phone, but it would be nice if they stood behind their product more, like Oakley or even EOTech. (I had an EOTech that got all kinds of jacked up when some AAs leaked inside it…EOTech cleaned it out properly and didn’t charge me, even though it was out of warranty and obviously my fault.)
While they’re out getting worked on, I bought myself a pair of the Howard Leight active sport muffs off Amazon for ~$45…they don’t look as cool, but I can buy 3-4 pairs of those and just pull a new one out when one goes bad for the price of the MSAs. (And they adjust to accommodate my massive head much better than the MSAs. Euros must have tiny heads or something.)
Good info I have been looking into a pair of good hearing protection, I rock the HL IP’s for the time being also, they are great for the money but still much is left to be desired IMO
You’re right, the HL’s do leave something to be desired, but they’re priced low enough that when they crap out, I can toss them and not lose sleep over it.
