Police arrested an alleged burglar this morning after he was shot in the leg by a Jackson homeowner.

Police identified the suspect as Johnny Washington, 42.

He was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for non-life threatening injuries and released into police custody, said Detective Roderick Holmes, spokesman for the Jackson Police Department.

Washington is being held in the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond on charges of house burglary.

A homeowner living in the 1300 block of Jefferson Street told police he was awakened before 5 a.m. today and saw the silhouette of a man standing in his bedroom.

The homeowner retrieved a weapon and followed the man as he fled.

When the alleged intruder made a threatening gesture, the homeowner shot the suspect in the leg.

Officers recovered items taken from the home, Holmes said.

“We can’t release the name of the homeowner at this time,” he said.

The case is still under investigation.

I thought this was going to be a Detroit story, especially after what I watched on NBC Dateline tonight. MI=Michigan, MS=Mississippi.
