It was only a little Walther P22, but she picked it out herself. We have been married for almost ten years, and she is just now showing interest in shooting. She is so proud of that little thing. She informed me I am taking her shooting next Saturday. She has never done that before. This could be a really good thing for me.
My $.02 make sure you take the time to truely train her on the use of the firearm, always remember to keep your cool, and make the shooting trip enjoyable for both of you! If at all possible, sit down the night before and go over weapons safety, and use of the equipment you will be bringing with you!
I am glad to hear your wife want’s to get involved, mine still hasn’t after ten years!
Definately, I gave her a little class on the function of the weapon last night. There will be a quick refresher course Friday night and a range safety class Saturday morning. We will work on stance, grip, and sight picture for a little while. I bought her a 500 round brick yesterday, so she should get to shoot as much as she wants. Hopefully, this is the start of something big.
Congrats to you, Jay.
I know it makes shooting “nicer” (if you will) when the wife is on board with you. We picked up the wife her own 9mm last year but she rarely travels to the range with me. She does seem understand my love of shooting & never has given me any grief about range trips or weapons purchases … so far :D. We should all feel pretty lucky when our wives make a weapons purchase.
I really enjoy shooting with my husband (C4IGrant). When I first met Grant, I did not like, own, or expect to ever shoot a gun…
Now I own a gun-shop, have more than a few guns in my name, and look forward to time on the range with my husband. (even had my CCW in VA, yet to get it OH)
I find more often than not, men like to share their shooting hobby with their wives. And when wives take an interest, the lines of communication open so men don’t have to lie (omit) information on purchases.
She had never even held a gun, let alone fire one before she met me. Her father is an anti gun, flaming liberal psychiatrist. Needless to say he hates me, my guns, and considers the years I spent in the military as wasted. Adding her as a shooter is a major coupe for the Pro 2A crowd. It has taken me a decade to erase her dad’s brainwashing, but it was all worth it.
A whole lot of familiarity in your post! We have a lot in common.
Being the only pro-gun, pro-life, Republican, Christian in my family does bring some interesting discussions…brainwashing has been mentioned a few times  .
I just got off of the phone with a range. I wanted to make sure they didn’t have any matches or classes scheduled. We are taking that little puppy for a spin when she gets home.
She was shooting pretty good by the time we came home. She was making COM hits at about seven yards consistantly, and making head shots at about five yards. She was very excited about how well she was doing with a little bit of coaching and practice. I was very proud of her, and she was already talking about “the next time we go shooting” on the way home.
The only down side to the day was her Walther had several failures to eject. It did this with three different brands of ammo. It still did it after taking a brush to the chamber. I also noticed the firing pin was hitting really high, all the way up by the case rim. She didn’t have any FTF, but it was high enough that it still worries me a little. I think I am going to send an e-mail to S&W/Walther about it. Hopefully, the will have me ship it back on their dime for repair.
