I found an LMT MRP (Standard) 16" upper and a Sig 556 today. They are the same price (approx $1700). I like the MRP and the full length hand guards that the Standard comes with. The price is obviously high and I wouldn’t be getting a lower for some time (because they are just not available). I like that I can easily swap the barrel for the 6.8mm. I like the looks. Simply, I like M4s.
The Sig, on the other hand, is the full weapon. It feels and looks good too. I think the sights suck. Well, at least that was my initial impression while handling it in the store. Other than that I don’t know much about them. I’ve read an article here and there in various guns mags over the last year or two, that is all.
Looking for some feedback from owners of both, or either. And, if you had the opportunity of buying either, which one would you choose?
My primary rifle presently is an AK (MAK90). Though I have a lot of experience with issued M16A2 during my time in the Corps, this will be my first 5.56 rifle. The primary purpose of the rifle will be two-fold, one of personal defense for me and the family; and the other for hunting (which gives the MRP a plus because I can use 6.8mm and hunt larger game).
I’m sure I will get crucified for saying this, but I would go with the Sig.
Buying an upper for the same price as an entire weapon[Sig 556] when your cash flow is restricted is IMHO a waste.
I also have 4 complete AR’s and 5 more lowers ready to build on…
From what I have seen, the Sig 556 seems to be pretty solid minus the shitty sights of course.
***If you haven’t shot the Sig yet, try to before you buy it. $1,700 is still a lot of cash do throw down on anything.
You are right, that is pretty high. I’m looking around at other places online and they seem to be going for $1300 for the MRP Standard 16" upper (which is LMT’s MSRP). But none of these places have them in stock. Damn.
A good friend just picked up a Sig 556 SWAT model in FDE. Loves it!! He has stated more than once he thinks this will become his “go to” rifle. He is an active duty Marine and has a lot of experience with the M16 and M4 but the Sig has thoroughly impressed him.
At some point, I need to get out and put a few rounds through it myself…
As noted, the sights are worthless. Buy quality BIUS or go straight optics, or both.
Both options are overpriced and I would not chose either for my first and only rifle chambered in 5.56.
I would instead wait for the panic to slow down and the credit cards of the paniced buyers to max out while keeping an eye out for a BCM midlength upper or order a Noveske 16" midlength N4.
However, of the two choices you mentioned, i would get the Sig 556. i have one and like it for what it is (and do not expect it to be what it isn’t).
I have heard and read some stuff on the Sig and people have been having problems with em. All hearsay so take it as you will. Couple of them were the LE models.
Thanks for the advice. This will certainly not be my last one. I don’t want to pay those high prices either, as much as I like the MRP. At various times during the day my brain seems to be compelling me to get something before it is too late. I’m resisting thus far because I think the craziness will settle and then the stores will have ample stock again.
