MPI test bolt markings

OK, so I didn’t want to hijack the CD thread anymore. I’ve got some questions concerning bolts that are stated to be MPI tested.

  1. Do all manufacturers mark their bolts, if that bolt is specifically MPI tested?

  2. What marks are used to indicate that a bolt has been MPI tested?

  3. Does the TDP require that all bolts are to be MPI tested or is batch testing authorized?

  4. Does the TDP require that a bolt be marked if it has been MPI tested?

  5. Does Colt mark their bolts as being MPI tested?

The more we use the TDP as a standard, the more I want to know about it.

I’m curious about this also.

  1. Generally, yes.

  2. MP stamped.

  3. Good question. From my understanding, the older TDP required that EVERY bolt and barrel had to be MP tested (after it was HP tested). The newer (revised TDP) apparently allows for batch MP testing.
To be brutally honest, the HPT/MP thing is really outdated. There are much better ways to check steel these days (like Xraying it).

  4. I believe that it does.

  5. Yes.

Here is the other dirty secret. If a company is NOT High Pressure Testing PRIOR to MP testing, the MP testing is virtually WORTHLESS as you did NOT stress the part.

The only companies that I am aware of that are HPT/MP testing EVERY bolt and barrel are:

Colt
LMT
BCM

Noveske too right?

I do not know where Novekse is getting his bolts from so I cannot answer for certain.

They advertise Shot peening & MP testing of each bolt. Their bolts are marked MP. They HP and MP their barrels.

Thanks much for the info Grant. It does clarify things for me.

Most every company shot peens their bolt (pretty common). Just got off the phone with Noveske. They HPT/MP test EVERY N4 barrel. They do NOT do that to their SS barrels. Also, their bolts are MP tested (only).

C4

Grant, did he indicate where they got their bolts?

No, but I am pretty sure I know where. It is the same place the FN buys their bolts from. The company also holds the current USGI contract for small parts.

C4

No.

UGSI required marking is an “M”. The “P” indicates Proofed. Commercial markings vary. This “M” marking has been as far back as M14 production.

100%

Yes, the bolt is proofed, MPI inspected, marked, and then parkerized.

Yes on USGI, most of the time on commercial.

Let me guess… is it C. M. T ? If not… oh well I tried.

Nope.

Do bolts that have “CM” stamped on them mean they were manufactured by Continental Machine?

ETA I’ve done some searches, and yes it does appear to mean Continental Machine. Some of my bolts I’ve purchased over the years from Bravocompany, Denny’s Guns/Global Tactical and Del-Ton all have the same “CM” on them. Hhhmmm…

I think it’s a bit further south than that.

(But I can’t say I’m 100% sure I know the answer myself…)

Derek

Grant,

Would you say LMT MP marks all of their bolts or are there some that may not have any marks on them MP or heat treatment marks?

I am sure that some could get out unmarked, but I do not believe that I have ever seen one.
