Mounting a light on MOE handguards?

I am wondering if I can mount a TLR-1 on my MOE handguards, and which rail section I need to do it? Is the TLR-1 tough enough to withstand the recoil? Do I need the 5 slot, or 7 slot, rail section?

I don’t know much about rail sections for the MOE, but I can’t think of a reason you’d need anything longer than the length of the TLR’s clamp section. I have a TLR-1 mounted at 12 o’clock on my DD, sitting right near the BC 1.0, and it’s holding up just fine after 500 rounds or so. Not a very thorough test, admittedly though.

Ive got that same setup. I got the smallest rail section i could, and i still have some room. The TLR-1 is designed to take hangun recoil which would be harsher then a 5.56 rifle. Whatever you do- dont put the
TLR-3 on there though. Ive broken three on my handgun- plastic rail clamp is a no go.

I have personally found mounting anything on the carbine/7.0 length handguards to be unsat as I run out of room. For mounting pistol lights I use this part from Midwest Industries and find that it works well to get the light out of the way of my hand but also allow the light to rest exactly where it’s easiest for my thumb to access it.

Rob, your a fckin genius.

I’ve used this same FSB type of mount with a Surefire G2L at work for the last couple of years. I liked it so much I have all of my personally owed carbines set up with one. Though I switched the lights for Surefire G2x’s.

Cheap, light weight, and effective.

I also will echo Rob_s’s conclusions that counting a light to standard CAR length handguards sucks, and you run outta room to work with.

I also use the Midwest FSB mount like Rob but with a G2L in a VLTOR Scout Mount. I also removed the ejection port side rail as it was unused and saved a few ounces in weight. Well, actually just under an ounce, but it also lowered the profile. The mount puts the light in my prefered 11:00 position and gets it out toward the muzzle and past the FSB reducing the shadow cast by the barrel and fsb. I actually run this setup on my SBR and it puts the bezel of the light almost even with the muzzle which really gives the light an uninterrupted beam.

If I were setting one up now, I’d probably go with a set of MOE handguards and one of IWC’s light mounts. Either the SMC or TMC. But that’s just me.

Not a bad option. They make good use of available space and set the light in a good position. My TMC setup has some movement between the light and mount (uses an open clamp type mount) and I’m curious if the new SMC (uses a full diameter clamp) might be more solid.

Can that be set up on the right side of the handguard, to run along the right side of the FSB? Would it work with a Streamlight PolyTac LED HP?

It is offered for either side. Just choose ejection port or bolt release side when you order.

EDIT: Never mind, Matt hit it.

I run my TLR1 the same way on my MOE carbine.

MOE handguards, TLR-1 with optional backplate and pressure switch on foregrip. That is the setup I have…5 rail worked for me.

I have the shortest Moe rail it works for me. I have one with a TLR. And one with an X300. The TLR is often dead because it turns on in my bag during transport. I saw a great mod here but have not tried it im sure it would probably solve my issues. It involves cutting the nubs down on the rear of the TLR1.

Hey Matt, I just ordered from http://primaryarms.com/main.sc and the model I got was this http://primaryarms.com/product.sc?productId=1610&categoryId=656
Will it have to be mounted on the left side, or will it mount in the vent holes on the right?

Looks like you got the one that has to be mounted with the light on the left side (bolt release side). The deal is that the holes have a bevel for the screw heads to fit flush, and that’s only done on one side. The Mount-N-Slot crew designed it to be side specific. Looks like you got the last one PA had.

This is the newest version of the IWC mount. I really like it:

I’ll dog pile on the argument against putting the light on the hand guard. There just isn’t enough real-estate.

I run my TLR-1 on the FSB mount as well.

I like the mod done to the switch. May look into that.

I’ve run the light on my FAL for time. Never a hiccup. It will handle 5.56 just fine.
