That gives me pause. I think our gut reaction is to be all right with a mother shooting a potential pedophile rapist, if that is what happened. But is it? There are some oddities here,
Investigators allegedly learned that the victim came in through the back door of the home at around 1 a.m. after the child invited him.
If the “child” is a 17-year-old teen inviting a 19-year-old guy man into her room, that is a lot different than a middle-aged man stalking an 11-year-old girl. Actually, the article does not seem to mention the child’s sex, so we are being sexist by assuming it was a girl. Maybe a teenage boy was hitting Grinder for a match? Playing devil’s advocate here - odds are it was a girl.
Memphis Police report that Scott arrived at the home at around 1:30 a.m. and began “loudly knocking at the front door and yelling, ‘Who’s at my house?’”
That suggests that mom was out at night, arriving home at 1:30 AM. So, why was the child left alone? Was Mom working that night, or out drinking? Again, the age of the child is significant - if a 10-year-old was left alone that is way different than a 16-year-old.
And why is Mom knocking at her own door and yelling?
The child allegedly told investigators that she was scared of Scott because Scott had previously threatened to shoot any boy she saw at the home.
Not good optics for the trial if your child is scared of you, and that you threatened to shoot “any boy” at the home. Is this a case of a daughter bringing a string of guys around? Does Mom just hate men in general?
Scott found the victim hiding under a bed and shot him as he was leaving the home
Well, as we all know here from our CHL training, if the “victim” of the shoot is fleeing then it does not usually justify a shoot - as it is not really self-defense at that point.
Now, don’t get me wrong - this guy quite possibly needed to be shot. But the news article is so sparse on the facts that it is hard to know what happened just from reading it.
What exactly happened is unclear, and the news story does little to clear it up. The press is so worried about casting aspersions on the child or the deceased that the article is practically useless. Mom may not be guilty of murder, but the media should be charged with sloppy reporting.
Edited to add: Did some Google-Fu and found this article, which does stipulate that the child was her daughter. ‘I shot him’: Memphis woman charged in fatal shooting of man hiding under bed
Edited some more: Found an article that claims the girl was 13 and the guy 20. If that is true, I can see why Mom wanted to shoot him - but that does not make it a legal shoot.
