Most versatile color for an AR?

For me, I am down between FDE and FG from Magpul. It seems like from the FG thread, that cameras and sunlight change the color drastically.

What do you think is the most versatile color aside from repainting your gun every season and place?

Most versatile for what?

purple. hands down, the best color.

Shade of brown.

Looks like shit, but is pretty effective

Black matches everything.

And it’s “thinning”.

I have a variety of colors, overall I think the LaRue Urban Dark Earth is probably the best. I wish they had more options out there besides just the LaRue furniture kit in UDE (like a PRS, UBR, or ACS as well as the MIAD and other accessories). Magpul makes it exclusively for LaRue.

I’ll be home in two weeks and take some pictures comparing it to the various FDE and FG colors out there.

Cameras do not change the color, they merely misrepresent it. Sunlight is where you will be using it, so base it off of that. I assume you are looking for a less obvious color than black, so consider the color that is more prevalent in the ACU pattern and other patterns for multi-environment camo, which would probably be FG for most of us.

This^

This is a solid base color. Look at how well USMC’s “Coyote Brown” blends in.

Dewalt Yellow.

It’s also the new black.

I think brownish tones are capable of blending with most environments. A combination of FDE with a little FG would be good, i think. And more better might be combining different manufacturer’s FDE colors with a little FG.

I guess it ultimately depends on what you like, and/or what you’ll be doing. I just plink, but I will be Duracoating my new build Magpul FDE, just because I like the color. If the zombie apocalypse happens, the brownish color will blend with WI outdoor settings through all seasons (we typically do not have constant snow cover through the winter).

Aren’t zombies colorblind anyway? Not sure…

Either way, it makes a good point, it depends on your surroundings. In the North East as I look out my office window now, I can imagine FDE being very visible in the bright greenery of area. I chose to go with FG for my first build since its pretty low key and looks like it may blend in well.

True, I put my SCAR down on the ground the other day and lost it. Damn thing blended right in…

With brown you can retain the ‘EBR’ designation too.

I know a color that is superior to any other for 50% of the time and is pretty darn good for the other 50% of the time, making it the best overall color for an AR.

That color is BLACK. Its dark in most places of the world about 50% of the time, which makes it ideal for that time each day, and even during daylight, the BLACK blends in nice with shadows and such.

Not trying to be a wise guy, but there is probably a reason that our Military likes theirs in BLACK. I believe I have just hit on that reason.

I believe you are wrong. I’ll leave this for the experts to flesh out but black is not even close to the best color if you are trying to blend in. If it was military uniforms would be black (they aren’t).

That might explain why the next generation of rifles for the military are going to be … a color other than black. Flat Dark Earth is the front runner, isn’t it?

FDE.
Back in the old days we used to call it “Brown”, but hey, whatever.
Change: the illusion of progress.
