It’s amazing how many people have the nicest duty/SHTF kit, but many don’t have a good pair of eyes. What do you use for scanning or spotting?
I have my 12x50 Leica Trinovid BN on a Manfrotto freestanding monopod with a fold out foot so I can spot in the prone position too.
I find that the 12x magnification beats 20-30x spotting scopes for actually ‘seeing’ the field and what might be hidden in the underbrush and shadows. It’s also really good for night viewing…
come on dosent everyone use these? i mean even when firing at 100meters you need one, please reply i am very interested in everyones research or purchases, i need one and your input will weigh hevily.
The tripod I have screws right into the bottom of the spotting scope.
Leupold makes the best spotting scopes out there due to the fact that they are extremely clear (maybe not Leica or Zeiss clear, but better than most people could even tell) and also use a mil-dot reticle. That makes applying corrections much easier for follow up shots.
I’m going to admit that I use a pair of 10X Bushnell binocular to “spot” when I’m shooting at less than 75 yards or so. I can see .22 inch holes with them, so it’s good enough. After that, I use a cheapie 30-60X spotting scope I got from Sportsman’s Guide. It’s a piece of crap, but I can see the holes at 100 yards easily.
Now that I’m going to be shooting at longer distances as often as I can, I’m going to need to upgrade, I think, but I will probably resist as long as I can.
Either that, or make friends with someone with a Leupold or better spotting scope.
I bought a cheap spotting scope a few months ago for use in sighting in and the damn thing already snapped off the tripod mount making it useless. I may just epoxy the damn thing to the tripod permanently since I need it so infrequently.
Not the latest or the greatest…but, I still use a Leupold 20x50 spotter. It is small, durable, light, and they can usually be found in the $200-250 price range.
