This weekend while shooting a Defensive/Tactical match with my pistol and shotgun my Mossberg 500 had a failure to extract during the last stage. I had to borrow a gun to finish the stage. A Cleaning rod easily dislodged the shell. I put it back in and it would not extract it again. I put some unfired shells in and they extracted fine every time. I received lots of opinions as to what happened. From the shell split( it did not) too I may have to much lube on the extractor, or the shell may have been too small in diameter. I did clean the gun the day before and I did lube it up good with Slip 2000 EWL. Nothing appears to be broken. Just want some opinions on whether I should try to delube it or carry it to a gunsmith. I was shooting Federal Small game loads 7 1/2.
Use a metal rod or wooden dowel about 10" long and rig some steel wool on the end. Chuck it in a drill and polish the chamber. Since it hasn’t happened before it’s probably build up. Polish it good and the problem should go away.

Thanks for the replies. I bought the shells several years ago from Wally world. I used a 590 to finish the stage with no problems. The gun has been rarely fired but probably did not ever have the chamber cleaned. I only cleaned the action because I did not have a 12 ga. brush.
My first thoughts are chamber fouling and marginal ammo.
Mechanically, rapid extractor and spring wear in the Mossberg commercial guns is common. Check the extractors for wear or chips, and their tension. When you replace them, request parts for the 590A1.
One of the aftermarket places makes an XP extractor spring for the Mossbergs. That might be worthwhile.
Springs in Mossbergs are pretty marginal in general. The worst: 8rd mag spring.
Take the barrel off the gun and beat the guy that said “too much lube on the extractor.”
Thanks for the reply. This exactly what I was looking for. I have never dealt with a Mossberg before, and I do not have a lot of experience with Shotguns in general. I’m thinking I may sell this one and get an 870 or some kind of Semi auto like an 11-87 or a Benelli. Just need some extra coin for that.
