I snagged a VC extended safety for my 590A1 and the installation seems simple enough. If I can get past the lawyer-devised tamper proof screw that holds the existing safety in.
Anyone have any tips-trips for these damn things? I have already tore the screw up a bit trying to get it out. I don’t have much in the way of drill presses, vises, etc. - do I just need to contact a gunsmith or does someone have some little tidbit of knowledge that will make my problem go away?

If you own a Dremel Moto-Tool, (and what serious gun owner doesn’t?) you can use a cut off wheel or circuler saw blade to CAREFULLY cut a slot for a standard screwdriver. If you don’t own a dremel, you might consider buying one. All my guns know to run and hide when they hear the sound of my dremel firing up. 
The easiest way to do it is take a small flat head screw driver angle it on one of the screw ears. Then lightly tap it in a counter clockwise direction too loosen it. Then use the screw driver and bare down and turn. Tape the receiver off around the screw with thick tape so you don’t damage the receiver.
Make sure you have the bolt cocked back so the detent ball doesn’t fall into the receiver and get lost.

I had actually tried that … and the combo I used results in dinging up the screw badly. I have a Dremel, but I’ll have to get some new bits for it.
What a stupid thing to do on a gun - using a screw that the user can’t remove. Stupid.

I removed many Mossberg safety screws using that method and never had a problem. Tap the screw driver lightly and keep it angled in a counter clockwise position and direction. All you have to do is just loosen it a little. I loosen mine about a quarter turn.

sounds complicated…hmm…drilling and all makes me nervous
I used a Dremel to remove the screw. I had the Dremel going a little too slow and it caught causing me to cut/knick the reciever. I’m still upset about it but only because I was thinking of selling it. The 590 was like new before.
Careful hands and keeping the Dremel at a high speed everything should go fine. Don’t forget about the ball detent and spring under the safety. They’ll fly out if your not careful.

As an aside, it helps to have the shotgun in a vise and to mask the receiver around the safety button with heavy tape to prevent the Dremel or driver from slipping and messing up the receiver.
And like MAX said, have the bolt back.
