I’ve got a Sig 716 Patrol Rifle(7.62X51) and am trying to decide on an optic to use on what I consider my “general purpose” rifle. I love the Aimpoints, but realize that a 1-4 would likely make a better general use optic. BUT, I’m an old guy, and shots beyond 3-400 yards are highly unlikely for me. Also, while I know it limits my choices a lot, my budget is around $600(not including mount). I’d just like something rugged that won’t limit my carbines potential TOO much. Should I just be satisfied with an Aimpoint?
What would you do in my place?
Thanks,

In your price range I would look for a TR24 triangle, SWFA 1-4, an ACOG, or a magnifier for your Aimpoint.
For your price range look at the Nikon Monarch African in 1-4x20mm. I have the 1.1-4x with the illum reticle on my 3-gun rifle and am tickled pink by the quality of it.
It is well inside your budget and uses standard low height 1" rings, always a plus. I am younger and have perfect eyesight but 4x is more than I need to hit a 12" steel plate at 300 yards.
For this price range i’d highly recommend the SWFA 1-4x. You can find them in very good used condition for less than 600. Check out the sample list on SWFA’s page.
You might also check out Vortex PST 1-4x as well. Will save you a few bucks on the SWFA and it’s a solid scope.
Thanks a lot for the ideas guys. Got shopping to do.

I would look into a Vortex PST. Either the 1-4 or the 2.5-10 flavor would work really well. The 1-4 of course would be great for really fast target acquisition, you might enjoy the 10x on the 2.5-10 for your range work. 2.5x is still pretty quick IMO.
