I was recently sold a large quantity (400 rounds) of USMC surplus Moly coated match ammo. I am very familiar with weapons, but not so much familiar with ammo. Can someone please explain to me what use this ammo has? Is it only for target shooting? If it has no tactical application, and would be harmful to use in this role, I will be getting rid of it. I’m perfectly fine with M855. I have already fired maybe 60 rounds through my Rifles, and now I’m a bit worried as I just now started reading about it.
Thanks
If the price was right I would just keep it and shoot away !!! Use it for training or whatever suits you !! I think Moly was just another BIG Thing in the shooting hobbies,& it has come & gone, but some guys still like & use it,more Bench Rest crowd I think . I believe it does have a bit higher velocity when compared to Non Coated ammo, but not much else !! Shoot it up and enjoy,I do believe there is Special Moly Cleaners to get the stuff out of your BBL when your all done with it,but other than that no big deal. And now that I have added my 2 cents worth,I’m sure someone will come along and set us both straight,![]()
So its not detrimental to fire? I read that once you start shooting moly out of a barrel, you should only shoot moly out of that barrel…
Thanks
That ammo you have is basically Mk262 that has a coated bullet. So apply the same info about Mk262 to the round.
Heres a thread with some good info about moly: http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2117996
And this one: http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1632195
I tried some moly coated ammo once… 1box (25rounds) of Hornady 75gr…
I’m not a sniper but didnt notice the improvements so I went back to standard ammo.
the rifle still shoot straight ![]()
Well it sounds like it just isn’t for me. How much are these worth? I have 340 left in an ammo can to sell. I’m not trying to advertise here, just curious as to what I should ask.
Why not shoot them, you’re not going to harm anything.
The admonition about not shooting both types of bullets basically says, “Don’t shoot moly, then naked bullets, then moly on top of naked bullets, then more naked bullets.” By doing so you won’t get the benefit of the moly.
As long as you’re willing to shoot just the moly bullets until you run out, then use any cleaner and brush, and then shoot just naked bullets you’ll be fine. You might not get every last trace of moly out after your first cleaning, but by the 3rd or 4th session, it will be gone.
Buy some jb bore paste as the last step in getting the moly out. I have a barrel that i have shot less than a 1000 moly coated bullets. I know it’s hundreds but unsure of the acutual count. A black patch always comes out.
The only thing i would say is if you have a chromoly barrel you will have to keep it oiled, because any moister in the air will cause the barrel to rust from a chemical reaction, when shooting moly bullets your velocities will go down ( less friction ) in barrel, the main reason for guys using it in benchrest shooting was for less copper fouling thats it. hope this hepls.
