Mod 2 or 14.5" w/ dimpled barrel

Hey, I’m going to be purchasing a new KAC rifle. I ordered a Mod 2 but I’m thinking about cancelling it because I found a used (but new/unfired) complete 14.5" with dimpled barrel for basically the same price. The 14.5" has the older integrated QD lower which I’m not a big fan of (guess it’s not a big deal though.) What would you guys get; Mod 2 or 14.5" SBR?

Get what YOU want.

I haven’t handled either so I wanted to get some opinions. Decided to go with the 14.5". Will hopefully be here this week. Can’t wait!

I have the 14.5" and love it.

You can always swap for the newer lower if it bugs you.

Is KAC not making a Mod 2 14.5?

Probably, or something somewhat similar to that configuration, but timing and delivery is likely subject to any .gov contracts they may need to fulfill.

You made the correct choice.

Arrived today… here she is

Does it have a pinned A2?

It’s not. I’m in Canada, so SBR laws don’t apply.

Bastard. Throw a MAMS on that bad boy. You won’t regret it.

Already have one ordered! Was planning on having the gunsmith install it but he’s out of town for a few weeks so think I’m gonna do it myself. Haven’t installed a brake before, but doesn’t look too hard.

Said a whole lot of people right before damaging their guns.
If you haven’t done it before I highly recommend having a KAC certified armorer do the work.

I would normally disagree if someone told me to take an AR to a gunsmith to change the muzzle device, but in this case, F2S is right. If you’ve never done it before, don’t start with a $2000+ rifle. Practice on an old Bushy or something. If I were you, I’d just leave the birdcage on for now and shoot it the way it was designed.

Nowadays you need a engineering degree to change out flash hiders or muzzel devices “sarcasm”

The best method I’ve found using the tools that I have is to wrap the barrel or fsb in a wad of old mousepads and a towel and then crank it in the bench vise until it doesn’t move, then twist away. I haven’t damaged a gun yet.

You’d be surprised at the number of screwed up suppressor mount jobs I’ve seen.

I’ve decided to do the install myself. The MAMS should be arriving tomorrow or the next day. I ordered a Wheeler Delta Series upper vice block to help with the install.

From what I’ve read, I hand tight it to 11 o’clock and then tighten to 12? Is that correct?

Is there anything special about installing the MAMS?

Anyone? Looking to do the install this evening.

The right way is to torque to 20 ft/lbs with the index pin within 5 degrees of 12:00. To do it right, you need a torque wrench.

For the rocksett, apply 3 drops to clean, degreased threads. Keep the rocksett on the muzzle side threads, no more than 1/2 the way back on the threads. Spread evenly, you don’t want to have a drip smeared on the back of the device. The rocksett needs to be on the threads, nowhere else.

Always do a test fitting before applying the rocksett, you don’t want to be trying to add or remove shims after the rocksett.

When you thread the device on, turn it back and forth to spread the rocksett.

I generally get another degree or so of rotation following a test fitting after putting on the rocksett.
