I understand that Larue has quite a following of die hard loyalists, and of course Aimpoint makes their own mount. I want an absolute cowitness height, and the ability to easily compensate for rail dimension variations.
Does anyone here have reservations about the new ADM mounts? I don’t own a single piece of gear which uses a lever to lock to the rail, but the ADM mount seems like a good way to go. The newness of the item has me second guessing which mount to buy, and any price difference between Aimpoint, Larue, and ADM seems relatively insignificant. I just want a good quality repeat zero capable mount.
I just picked up my 1st ADM mount today. The equivalent of the LT150 moutn. That said…
I’ve been using LaRue mounts since about 6months after they’ve been released. I do believe the ADM mount is a better thought out design…take from that what you will. The ADM mount is very nice…believe me…the next few weeks will be HELL on this mount.
When I first heard of this mount, my immediate reaction was that it was just an el-cheapo knockoff, that there was no way that it could possibly equal the LaRue. At that point I realized that I was not approaching the situation with the open mind I should be.
Of course, I had just bought another LaRue mount a month or two earlier.
People marry themselves to their gear, and don’t want to believe that they made anthing less than the best choice, even if that choice occurred when there was no other close competitor.
The price-point of the item puts it in the same league as the LaRue, and were it not up to the value, you can rest assured that Grant, rob_s, gotM4, and anyone else that put their hands on the item, would immediately denounce it for nothing short of heresey if it was not a quality piece.
Other than that, the LaRue is lower 1/3 cowitness, so it doesn’t fit your requirements anyway.
Here’s some pics of the AD-68H I bought my wife for her Aimpoint M2 on her SBR. I like it a lot. It’s simple to install and adjust and feels very solid.
Enough with the pictures, I ALREADY ordered one from BravoCompany. They sent a shipping # within 2 hours of my online order! The new extended scope mount was almost on my order…
The ADM mounts looks well made, but it looks like there are alot more seperate parts and pieces than the LaRue mounts have, and that is a bad thing in my opinion as it just leaves more opportunity for things to break.
The current version of the LaRue mounts have evolved from a similar amount of parts to the current “K.I.S.S.” design. Only time will tell if these new ADM mounts are up to the task they are designed for. I know one thing for sure, they wont be able to beat LaRue’s customer service. But then again, that would be impossible.
I am with you on this one. I think i was the last guy on the planet to get a CD player. Still don’t have an I-Pod or anything comparable. Or a Blackberry. Oh well, somehow I manage…
No problems on this end. I’ve pulled this mount off, thrown and dropped kicked it across the range while verifying it still zeroed after each “launch”, and at the end of 15 sequences, it had no problems staying zeroed. After that my ADHD kicked in and I moved onto CQC drills…
“Looks” can be deceiving, but from the pictures alone (as I have never handled one of the ADM mounts), it appears that the rings are more complex as there are two seperate halfs of the ring that attach to the mount as opposed to the LaRue design which one half of the ring is integral to the rest of the mount and only one half of the ring is seperate. There are also 6 bolts to tighten down the rings as apposed to 4 on the LaRue. For me this is neither good or bad, but I have never had an optic come loose in a LaRue mount so 2 extra sets of bolts/threads is unnecessary with the LaRue design and offers no benefit over the LaRue design.
The ADM locking lever design also looks to be more complex of a design with more things to break, strip, etc. and the base has a seperate plate or rail grabber on the same side as the lever. It appears that the ADM mount also has a cross-bolt to secure these seperate pieces to the rail.
The lightening holes dont make much sense to me as they may potentially sacrafice strength for a minimal amount of weight savings.
The over-all parts count between the two may be more, less, or the same, but the ADM mounts look to have more parts on the critical moving and attachment points than the LaRue mounts do.
Again, only time will tell if the ADM design is up to the challenge of heavy duty LE/MIL use. I have NO dog in this fight as I am just a lowly patrolman who likes to get the best made product for his money, and if the ADM mounts end up being the better product, I will gladly make the switch. But my LaRue mounts have been absolutely flawless, so I wont be spending my money to test out a new mount that has zero benefit over my current LaRue mount(s).
Now, if someone wants to send me out one to test out against my current set-up I would gladly accept:D
My main complaint with the ADM mounts is that they rely on springs, and at least three of them. No, these springs likely won’t cause the mount to fall off if they fail, but they are there, and appear/feel very fragile, nonetheless.
They are also not exactly “quick release”, at least in my usage. In order to get the clamp to tighten sufficiently it has to be closed down to the point that it doesn’t just pop off without wrestling with it a bit. Since the Larue “foot” pivots 100% out of the way, the mount/optic pops off much more easily. I am beginning to question the utility of QD at all, but if you’re going to not be QD you can buy a mount for 1/3-1/2 the cost with fewer moving parts.
I’ll know more in a few weeks after I run one through a 3-day EAG class.
The main benefit of QD in my opinion is that if your optic were to be damaged to the point that you could not see through it to use your iron sights, the QD comes in handy here allowing you to be able to remove the optic without the use of tools.
In real-world blood & guts combat I may tend to agree with you. However, if a non-LEO civilian gets to that point, no amount of QD is going to save your ass.
