MK19 Parts kit

Just had a question about the legality of owning a parts kit(I’m assuming it’s complete, just needs assembly) for a MK19. Can civilians own this if it’s not assembled? Can it be sold without an FFL? What would the market be like for one of these? Price?

Edit: The kit has everything but the receiver.

I don’t think it would be legal for civilian ownership with the intent to assemble, its an automatic destructive device Post-86 and would have to be manufactured… To be honest I don’t think there is even a section on the ATF paperwork for such a device to be transferred to an individual. It would have to be Manufactured by a Class 2 manufacturer and then I would assume it would only be available to Class 3 FFL/ SOT’s with an L.E. Demo letter… Do you know of one for sale? I’ve never heard of anyone owning a MK19 before. However, I could be wrong…

I think owning just a parts kit is legal as long as the main registered receiver plate was not present… similar to owning an old MG-42 kit with the receivers cut in half and a section missing

Just keep it in the armory, don’t bother taking it home. No market on a Mk19 parts kit. All it will do is raise eyebrows.

LE Agencies…hell even soldiers and Marines in Iraq post-2007 don’t use Mk19s.

I hope you’re not implying that I would consider stealing something. I have no idea where it is at, just heard about one that came up for sale, so I was curious about .civ ownership. I’ve always thought these were very cool. I can’t imagine a LE agency needing a FA 40mm grenade launcher, and I’m 99% certain that the .mil is currently using them.

Following the rationale I have read here then it would also be illegal to purchase an M16 parts kit, or even a Romanian AK parts kit. So the anwwer is NO it is not illegal. Without a receiver the sum of the parts is just that- a pile of parts.

I hope its not illegal. I got a German MP43, complete, and original, parts kit sitting right here at my house. I been thinkin bout posting it on the EE for someone who might use it.

Yup, no receiver, no problem. There are dealers out there that own them, the last kit I saw was around 10k.

Lmk if you do.

Thanks for the intelligent replies. I can get a smoking deal on this so I think I’m going to do it.

I do not know how real it is, but I believe there are a few pre 86 MK19s.

Here is a thread with one up for sale @ 450,000$:bad:

If my memory serves me correctly… Ohio Rapid Fire did sell the mk19 kits for somewhere between 3-5k.

I did a quick search and the website appears to be down. Seems the owner passed away so I am not sure what became of the store. They were also making/made 80% receivers.

No, I wasn’t implying that…sorry if it seemed like it.

I’m just a logical guy, not saying you aren’t, but really…how much of a market for parts kits can their possibly be? Thats my perspective on it. But it definitely isn’t illegal to own one.

Is that so?

If you can find someone to build it up for you, you’ll have one hell of a collectible. You’ll do nothing but profit if you decide to sell it later on.

He could not have someone just “build it up” as the parts are for a full auto destructive device. He would have to have someone make a semi auto receiver and modify the full auto parts to semi. It would still require NFA registration as a DD and the plans to do the semi conversion would need to be approved by ATF Tech Branch. That would be awfully expensive to just shoot chalk/smoke rounds since you cannot get HE rounds.

Well I would think it would still be a supply and demand situation. I see no loss in buying it, hanging onto it for awhile, and then selling it for a higher price. I’ve made money that way and the last time I did it, was an M-60 kit I sold to a title II manufacturer, for 2800 dollars. I think I paid maybe 800 for it when I got all the parts minus receiver together. I bought a transferable AC-556 from the guy I sold the parts to. When I figured out what I really spent on the AC-556, it came to about 3 thousand. So, yes, you can indeed make money from parts kits, and in my case, brought down my last machine gun to something reasonable in price. Bottom line, if the kit is cheap, buy it, cause you’ll make money on it later.

I am well aware of the procedures involved with the project. My point was that if he went through with it, he’d have a unique collectable that could command quite a premium due to its rarity.

No offense was intended so please don’t take it that way. Your post that he should have someone build it up for him did not indicate in anyway that you were aware of the procedures. I was just trying to make the point that it would be an expensive and time consuming project full of potential legal problems. I am sorry if you took it as an insult to your knowledge.

I don’t think I would build it to actually fire, way too expensive. But at the price it’s listed for, it would make for an interesting lawn ornament with some sand bags.
