I’m new, my first AR15 build. Here are the specs to my upper
Krieger barrels 18 inch stainless steel 1-7.7 twist .750 diameter with a rifle length gas system
Seekins Billet upper
Spikes tactical full auto NB BCG
Surefire 5.56 muzzle brake
PRI Gen III hand guard
Syrac ordinance .750 adjustable gas block
I’m almost done with the lower but I cant decide on what kind of buffer system to use
Some say Rifle buffer
Some say Carbine buffer
Rifle will shoot smother?
Carbine won’t?
Please advise me on which to use or the reasons for choosing either if possible!
As you can see THIS IS NOT A TO SPEC MK12 I just want the most accuracy out of it I can get and as it appears, the buffer is the only thing up in the air.
Money is not an option or wait time, the barrel took almost 8 months haha. Also, what is the best of the best for either, I don’t want to slack on any part of this build
I know this is milspec but like I said I’m not concerned with keeping it to spec. If the rifle length is going to cause the platform to be more accurate or smoother to shoot… or both then ok.
A buffer system and stock does not affect accuracy of the firearm. It only affects ergonomics, and cycling function of the firearm. Both will work, pick whichever you prefer if you don’t care about being MK12 accurate. Oh and call it a SPR, you are not building a MK12.
The Mk12 SPRs have been seen running a variety of stocks. Before I built my Mk12 Mod 0, I did a lot of research as to what stocks were used. Since the Mk12 uppers were originally mounted onto M16A1 lower assemblies, I started out with an A1 stock, but later changed to the SOPMOD. I prefer the adjustability and the comfort of the SOPMOD compared to the A1. Additionally, you will see variations in the grips as well. Where Naval Special Warfare units comes into play, they have the options and ability to outfit their weapons as they need to. This is why you see different variations in their weapons.
Add another vote for the Vltor A5. On my personally owned rifle, I use the A5H2 (5.33 oz) buffer with Springco spring and it’s incredibly smooth. My issued rifle (which is also a Mk12ish SPR type rifle) has a standard carbine buffer tube with a milspec spring and H2 buffer. It functions just fine, but I prefer the A5 system. Can I tell a difference?..Yes. Will it be worth it for you to change/will you reap any benefit from changing?..I can’t answer that.
Ill throw another monkey in the works: JP silent capture spring. Although it works best IMO with their light weight carrier.
I have the combo(spring and light weight carrier) in my SPR build with a Magpul fixed rifle length stock and a Syrac adjustable gas block(18" krieger rifle gas barrel) and with it adjusted to min gas for full function(1 click down starts to cause issues) you can fire the gun without shouldering it and it barely moves. Everybody that has shot it has been surprised at the almost non existent recoil as well as how smooth the gun runs overall. I went to a 223/5.56 only competition and was the only AR at the shoot and ran with the bolt guns much to their surprise(and anger).
If I didnt want to run the lightweight carrier and silent capture spring combo I think I would look at either a rifle length setup or a carbine setup with at least an H2 if not an H3.
So you’re seeing the “Mod H” then? We keep hearing they are still floating around in inventory but newer guys have no idea what they are. They’re all the coolness of a Mk12 with the practicality of a Recce.
Just googled MOD H and yes, that is what I have sitting behind me now.
We still have two of them although I think much of what they can do is better accomplished with one of our SCARs outside of magazine interchangeability. Hoping to get it out on the range here next week.
Cool, you’re one of 4 people I’ve encountered between TOS and here who have access to or still use them. As soon as I sell some of my Mk12 parts off my 2nd later pattern Mod 0, it’ll be going under the knife to become a Mod H.
It’s a shame those uppers couldn’t noodle their way out of the armory…
