What is the minimum barrel length for a fighting gun on a mid length gas system?
I ask because I’m thinking about a 12.5" and would love to get the longest gas system possible. I’m trying to get something that is handy for in-house but still has some punch out to 300m or so.
I see the shortest mid length Noveske has is 13.7 so is that the ideal?
I’m looking for the softest shooting 12.5" FIGHTING gun as my ideal. So whatever length it has to cycle reliably. I figured the longer gas system typically helps lessen the beating that the rifle takes and translates into softer recoil and faster follow up shots.
I would like a 12.5" but am open if other lengths\gas systems work better ie the 13.7" comment. I’m basing this on my experience with 14.5-16" guns that shoot better with mid-length vs carbine length. I felt a difference when shooting my SR-15 (which is even longer) that I believe is mostly attributable to the longer gas system.
You failed to mention what your opinion of the “best gas system” is for a 12.5". Or 13.7 for that matter.
The Kino is a carbine length gas system but offers you the mid length handguards for a little more control. Im interested to see what folks have to say. A middy SBR ia nice option. I have a 14.5" BCM Middy it is smooth.
Exactly. If they are going to go ahead with the trouble of putting a FSB 9" from the receiver, why ALSO put a gas block at 7" unless, the mid-length distance wasn’t as optimal.
I have a Noveske 13.7" middy with pinned KX3. The gun shoots as smooth as butter, but doesn’t cycle with low pressure ammo (Privi, .223, etc.). I’m sure Noveske could open up the gas port a bit to make it work, but it may not be ideal.
If you’re going 12.5", I think you’re going to get a carbine system. I have one, and I love it…I don’t think you’ll have many complaints if you go with a BCM, DD, Noveske, etc. Just my $0.02.
