I was talking to a friend the other day and he asked “What would you do if you had a fre hundred grand or million dollars to start a business or invest?”
Not really a question of a dream, but a real money maker.
I couldn’t come up with much, I said I guessed residential rental real estate.
But I know that was a basic answer and uninteresting.
How about you guys, what business or investment do you think is great these days and wish you could get into?
A lot of that depends on the level of risk I want to take. At current age in interests for example, I’d probably put it in fairly boring but predictable places, like index funds and such. If willing to take the ups and downs of tech stocks, hard to go wrong with chip manufacturers like AMD in my non professional opinion. If I was to take a very high risk with possibly high returns, I do know people who have done well with Bitcoin and related. But, personally, I don’t have the temperament to see my investments swing wildly in value. People also need to take into account their personality for risk.
Sounds like you are talking local, not just a stock buy?
Real estate rental seems to be the smart play. I think that we are due for another round of inflation, as wages rise to give back purchasing power. The worry I have is that supposedly Wall Street/PE is into the market, and if things start to go sideways and they have to unwind, you could take a hit in capital. But to me rental real estate is a cash flow play.
Was at a thing and a guy at our table had the regional Ditch Witch or something like that dealership. We are going to have to build stuff. Not sexy, but something infrastructure related. But a business like that.
Funny thing is, even a million dollars isn’t that much money anymore.
One thing that I have noticed lately is that our local indoor 1980s style mall seems to be killing it. Even a month or so ago before ‘Xmas’ season. It is probably the most upscale mall. It was crowded. Seems like a lot of recent emigrees and the usual kids. But the stores seemed busy and there aren’t any more empty stores. That took me by surprise. Not sure what to do with it.
My Town doesn’t have a Dairy Queen.
I have locations picked out already. A block away from the shopping area and a block from the High School.
Friday Night Lights will make me rich.
Infrastructure services & equipment manufacturing. Regardless of your thoughts on EV’s, everything that’s coming online requires a ton of grid capacity that does not exist - from tower & line hardware being near EOL in places, to transformers any lager than whats on your pole being backordered years.
Same thing goes for nat gas infrastructure - pipelines are old, people are installing gen sets in new builds as fast as they can.
Theres a business opportunity there rolling up infrastructure consulting or installation companies & any manufacturing facility would probably see significant support from local economic development agencies.
