I know that P-Mags have been widely used by military personnel in Iraq/Afghanistan (and been assigned an NSN). What about other accessories such as sights, stocks, handguards, etc.? Have these seen much official (or unofficial) use by combatants overseas?
According to my marine friends: you can put those things on your rifle, but most don’t. to them it is a tool. they learn how to shoot it, and use it to kill. they dont bother spending money on it, since its not really theirs. some guys do, some even return the rifle to uncle sam with all the goodies on it.
Same here. Some of My friends who are in the military love Magpul products and have put them on their rifles, but not everyone in the military is a “gun guy”, and most soldiers just carry what they’re issued.
You’ll occasionally see Magpul stocks and mags in videos of soldiers here and abroad. I think it all depends on the soldier and the unit they are in. One of my Marine friend’s said it depends on the CO if they will allow you to modify your rifle or not. Some CO’s won’t let you put any aftermarket stuff on your rifles, and some CO’s don’t care.
I’d like to hear a veteran member here confirm this though.
It depends on the leadership. I’ve watched a trooper draw his weapon from the arms room - for a deployment - and then pull his goodie bag out and start hanging crap he never trained with on his AR. Fortunately for him, an NCO saw the same thing and got to work on young Joe.
I remember seeing the MFR (memo for record) telling us to stop using non-USGI mags when we were in Iraq. Again, leadership in particular units either enforced or ignored that memo. We chose to politely ignore.
Ultimately, in my opinion as a logistics supporter, not a shooter in the Army - I see more of my troopers (support) hanging MAGPUL and other crap on their rifles then the shooters. Most of my guys are not gun guys…they just want that “Operator look” when they take the selfies and hang them on Facebook.
IMHO of course, your perceptions may be different.
oh boy, you must visit the Army Recruiting Forums. I had to stop going there to answer questions because of the stupid gun related questions
Uh, I don’t think I would last too long. I don’t answer often…but it is a question near and dear to my heart.
I see you are an ammo guy. Cool. I’m going to an ammo job soon - Go Ordnance!
I never added anything to my M4… as it’s Government issue… if it were my own… I’ll ad all the functional items I’ve have tried over the years… I believe many items make the gun more comfortable to shoot in my civilian life…
I’ve seen some guys completely outfit their rifles overseas with magpul furniture, though most were in positions to never actually use their rifle. For the most part, you see a part here or there replaced.
Personally, I don’t change out what’s issued. It is a tool, I learn to fight with it, looks aren’t nearly as important when you come to that realization.
I’ve always heard it being up to the CO. Personally, I’ll switch out a few things as long as I can.

I know some active duty soldiers stationed here in the US that use them domestically. One guy sold me a ton of his Magpul FDE furniture after he used them for training here in the desert out west. I’d imagine some soldiers would upgrade the accesories since some of those on GI rifles are probably old and beat up. And if you are stationed here in the US you can just order the Magpul stuff and put it on your duty rifle if its allowed by the CO’s.
