Military traveling with M4

I am curious, any of you guys in the military that have nice setup ARs. When you PCS to a state that has extra laws against weapons that you have, what do you have to do with your weapons?

new guy by the way. stationed in Guam  don’t own any AR’s yet

Unfortunately you have to just roll with the punches, most of the time. When I PCS’d to my first assignment (Spangdahlem, GE) I had to leave all my firearms behind. Germany doesn’t like their citizens to go armed, and we were no exception to the host nation’s ruling. That said, I left all of them locked up at my parents’ house.

When I moved back to Langley, VA, I quickly celebrated my freedom and brought them back up there. Luckily VA allows concealed carry, had a good amount of ranges and stores in the area, and was pretty gun-friendly.

Now that I’m out of the Air Force and back home in KY, there’s no separating me from my toys.

EDIT/ADDITION: Some places will allow you to take your firearms with you, but they’ll pretty much sit in the base armory’s inventory for your full duration of tour… and some places simply will not allow them into their country. Germany was one of the latter. IMO, if I knew the weapons were going to be locked up in the armory, out of my sight and care, I would just leave them with a family member anyway. Just my $0.02.

thats good to know. when they are in the armory, can you go in there and oil them up? maybe blow the dust off of them?

Where are you PCSing to? We may be able to give you better info if we know where you’re going.

I’ve only PCSed once in my career and that was from McGuire AFB, NJ to Ft. Dix, NJ. After about 9-10 years in NJ I finally moved to PA so that I can add all of the “good stuff”.

If they are in the armory, and your location allows you to shoot them somewhere, you can (with written permission of the Commander) check them out and use them.

However, from my understanding is can occur in two formats per the CC’s discretion. He can issue you written permission to do so, and you must seek permission every time you wish to do this (read: major pain in the ass)… or he can issue a blanket statement that you can check it out whenever (rarely done anymore, due to liability and security issues of someone checking out a weapon at their leisure).

Back to the specific question you asked, in regards to being able to maintain them yourself. I’m not sure, and cannot say for fact. Will they maintain them for you? Again, I can’t answer that. But honestly would you want them to? I’m not all that keen on someone else stripping apart my weapons, and reassembling them in God only knows what fashion, when I’m not there to supervise it. Just because they are trained to do so, doesn’t mean I necessarily want them monkeying with my weapons. Whether fluff or not, I’ve heard too many horror stories and urban legends of SF (Security Forces) guys playing with other people’s privately owned weapons, using them at the range, etc.

Does that happen now days? Surely not. Right?

My vote: If you can’t take them with you to a specific location, find a friend or relative that you trust and leave them with that person. They’ll probably be in much better hands, and you’ll have the peace of mind knowing they’re safe and sound.

You can always send them my way, and I’ll take care of them for you.

What

Every time I was the MFIC, those that chose to keep POWs in the Armory kept them locked in a case that only they had the key to, and those were stored in a separate container – the daily safe checks counted locked cases, and no dick skinners but the owner’s locked on to a POW.

Deleted.

im not PCSing for another two years, just want to make sure the goodies Im buying soon will not get destroyed or confiscated simply because of where they send me next.

Nah, worst case scenario would be them locking them away in the armory and you getting them back when you move along to your next assignment. Hopefully you’ll PCS somewhere that’s gun friendly and you can keep them with you and use them.

Lance,

I was in Guam from 2002-2003 at COMNAVMAR. IIRC, you can buy firearms in Guam, but there is a permit/ registration type scheme there. That being said weapons can be stored aboard ship or ashore in the armory with the CO’s authorization. As a matter of fact I had to have a POW book and procedure set-up even though I didn’t have any. But there were more than enough guys in my unit that lived off base that had weapons.
