Other than the longer sight radius, what are the advantages, if any of going with a mid length gas system vs. a carbine length one?

Mid length systems are not quite a violent as a carbine systems so there is less stress on the parts, which translates into less breakage. Having said that, a good rifle with a carbine system will out last most shooters.
