Melonite Finish

I have a couple of guns I would like to have a Melonite finish applied them.

Who does the best work applying the finish. If you happen to have a link, and or pictures that would be great.

I’m pretty sure Constructor would be a good person to ask about this as he deals extensively with the process. But I don’t think it can be done to a finished weapon. It’s done to various parts during manufacture, before assembly.

Just for clarification of terminology melonite is not a “finish” per se, but rather a treatment that alters the physical properties of the steel substrate itself. More importantly, what firearms are you interested in having melonited?

I have had a stainless 1911 one done by Drake Oldham. I don’t know who he used to do it but it was awesome. the action got slicker, and the finish was damn tough. Just to be clear, it was melonited, then park’d.

And it was done to a complete weapon.

And be advised that since the hardness goes up, the complexity of post meloniting machining goes up. I should have had a Dawson rail installed before meloniting.

I would have to check with the man that did the work on this Commander to find out who did the Melonite but I am real happy as to how this turned out. Also, it is my understanding that smaller parts can’t be treated but what size is “smaller” I do not know.

Thank You for the information, and the pictures, nice looking 1911, several years ago I sent one of my Les Baer’s off and had it finished with Melonite, and it still looks good, I was pretty sure that a complete handgun could still be done. The gunsmith that done my Les Baer is no longer in business and that is the reason for my post. Thanks again
