Medal of Honor Recipient Sgt. Roy Benavidez

I saw this video yesterday, had never heard of this guy. It is a truly incredible story of super-human grit and determination in the face of overwhelming danger.

The video is a little long and the quality is not great, but it is well worth hearing the tale of this Green Beret. The Sgt. tells his own story, and he is a very good storyteller! It is a reminder of the tremendous sacrifices made by a few people to protect the rest of us.

Thank you Sgt. Benavidez, and thank you to anyone else who puts on a uniform to serve or defend the United States of America!

he was talked about in Magpul Dynamics Reality Check carbine dvd. Grade A Ultimate Bad Ass

I found a Roy Benavidez GI Joe action figure at Walmart 15 years ago… Of course I bought it.

Learned about him from Plaster’s SOG book that I bought at the Gunsite Pro Shop in the 90’s.

Thanks for sharing. What an inspiration.

He was featured in the IET book issued to me at Ft. Benning in 2002.
Also read about him in SOG.

100%, certified bad ass.

Wow, that was amazing, thanks.

My father told me of MSG Roy Benavidez’s exploits when I was a kid, I’ve always looked up to that warrior.

You all need to read this book by John Plaster:

SOG: Secret Wars of America’s Commandos in Vietnam

Benavidez’s story was in there as well as many other heroic actions by men like him.

I remember watching the presentation ceremony, it was on TV. President Reagan said “If it was a Hollywood movie, you would never believe it. But let me tell you about an incredible hero.”

Let me tell you, it was an amazing and moving speech. Our nation is incredibly fortunate to have such warriors, then and now.

+1. That book and its sequel are great reads.

Some more required reading on MACV-SOG by fellow Medal of Honor recipient CSM Franklin Miller:

Reflections of a Warrior: Six Years as a Green Beret in Vietnam

Incredible story of perseverance and courage. I just ordered the books that were mentioned

Of the dozens and dozens of Nam related books, bios, etc I have read, none impacted me like that book did.

I had the honor of meeting and speaking to him while I was assigned to the NCO Academy at Fort Sam Houston. He was a great man and will be sorely missed.
