Well I wanted to put some info on these out there since there is little about them. I received two Mecgar plus 2 extension from G&R. These are for the full size guns but will work for the compacts also in 9mm, 40s&w, .357 sig. I am completely happy with the end product. I added two rounds of 40 S&W while keeping the same size as the factory finger extension. If I had a 9mm I feel that the extension would give you 3 extra rounds. The mag extensions fit perfect, drop free and lock the slide back 100% of the time so far with factory springs. They match the grip of the gun very close but just a tad bit off. Range test yesterday included 146 rounds. They were each 100% with Federal 96 rounds of 180 grain walmart ammo, and 50 speer gold dot HP 180 grain. Hope this helps anyone interested in these extensions. Thank you Grant!

Is it just an extension or does it include a new mag spring? I’ve always wondered about the long term durability of mag extensions and their effect on the magazine spring with constant use.
No, only the extension. I have also wondered that. I will have to see. I replace my springs yearly, so I will see if I find any problems by then.
Is there any trick to installing these on the magazine?
I just got a new 9c magazine and extension from G&R, but so far I can’t get more than 12 rounds in the magazine unless I slide the baseplate forward by about a 1/4 inch, which is obviously not secure.
Thanks for the review. I’ve had my eye on these and was wondering about how they work. I was suspicious because of my percieved lack of interest.
Please update us as you go if you don’t mind.
Post retracted. See my post below.
Bryan, are you sure you have them installed correctly? Mine won’t budge without taking a screw driver to the metal tab at the back.
(the tab goes over the back of the mag, not inside; once you slide on the extended base plate, use a smal screw drive blade in the slot on tab to pull it down into a fully seated position and it shouldn’t budge without lifting up with a screw driver blade in the slot)
I ordered 2 from Grant for my 40c with SL 9mm conversion - 1 for the compact 9 mag in the pistol & 1 for the full size 9 mag I carry for my spare reload. I get +2 in the compact mag & +3 in the full size mag. With 1 in the chamber, I am now carrying 35 rounds of 9mm on my person. Fit is as good as factory base plates, and function is flawless, with no issues seating the mag with slide closed & round chambered.
I have NOT tried these on my .40 mags yet.

Bryan,
Actually virtualpm beat me to it, but after messing with them, this seems like the best bet

Are those +2 different from other +2 mods that MEc-Gar makes? I have some left over from from Sig P226 mags, would those work on the M&P. 3 more rounds on a FS sounds interesting, especially for3-gun.
After reading both posts from virtualpm and tb417, I retried the Mec-Gar Plus-2. I was able to get 2 extra in the compact mag and 3 in the fullsized mag (both 9mm). It fits well, holds well and seem to work great. I will be ordering more to complete my fullsize mag collection.
I wanted to thank both virtualpm and tb417 for their help. I have also included some pics to help anyone else in the future.
Compact with pinky ext.
Compact with Mec-Gar Plus-2. Fits, but feels “off”. If I kept it on, I would shave it smooth on the front and sides.
Compact with X-Grip
Compact with X-Grip and Mec-Gar Plus-2. The X-Grip is too big and casues the mag not engage. The X-Grip would have to be modified for it to fit well.
Compact with a fullsized mag with Mec-Gar Plus-2. Fits well and actually feels fine
Fullsize and stock mag.
Fullsize with Mec-Gar Plus-2. Feel great, with 20+1 rounds.
Have you tried dropping these at all ? i know some other aftermarket baseplates occasionally “explode” when dropped while doing a reload. Just wondering if anyone has tested this or experienced problems like this in these extensions.
I just tried some drop tests. Dropped 1 compact and 1 fullsized mags on carpet, grass and my tile floor. Non popped off. I ordered more for my other mags - once I get them on, I will test each mag ![]()
I guess the only “issue” I have with them is that they do not match up in color / texture. If I could melt/cut them to fit better I would, but that is not where my talents lay.

Thanks to the posters above, I figured out that I hadn’t installed these correctly. With the extension, my compact magazine will hold 14 rounds. The baseplate appears to be attached quite securely. I’ll be testing these for function over the next few weeks.
i was a beta site for them almost 2 years ago. i have a great working relationship with mec gar and sell a ton of their mags.
i used then in both guns as they sent me 4 to try. have not had 1 m/f with any use at all. i use the ismi spring in all full size, but the factory compact seems to work fine. the full size did NOT WORK with the std spring with the arredondo’s either. thats why he get the ismi now for the kit.
they were a little confusing as i got no paper work just 4 of them in a box. had to call, a really sharp lady at mec gar and she told how to do it correctly.
great people
great gear
great service
you cant go wrong
p.s. their 1911 mags ARE FINALLY as good as it gets. took a while tho.
p.p.s. i use only ismi springs in everything, per kyle at viking tac., he is an a long time friend.
good luck
Sorry for the semi-necropost, but after recently finding this thread I bought 2 of these extensions for my M&P 9c. They arrived today, but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to install them!
I feel like there’s a part missing somehow: the metal “lips” at the base of the 9c mags are beveled inward, not outward. So when you remove the factory baseplates, you can see that the grooves cut into the baseplates are engineered in such a way as to perfectly grab/interlock with those inwardly-beveled lips on the mag base.
But the Mec-Gar +2s look to have been built for magazines with outwardly beveled mag base lips: there is no way that I can see that the inward lips on the M&P mags can grab/interlock with the grooves in the Mec Gar baseplates.
So after trying a few different methods, I just can’t get the MecGars to stay on the M&Pc mag bodies. And the one time I did manage to get the Mec Gar to stay on, it was on at the wrong angle and popped right off when I seated it into the pistol. It just looks and feels all wrong to me. What am I missing?
Thanks for any help here.

They work.
Bought 6 and tried one on this AM. Very nice. It is not intuitive to put on, but when you realize that that tab in the rear goes OUTSIDE the tube, you’ll figure it out. Very nice, and they fit snug and don’t slide.
The color match is good. They do not stick out in the front to match the lip at the bottom of the grip, but no biggee. I like that the rear is unencumbered - a glove will not get in the way of a mag drop. I like that they are a bit wide at the bottom with a finger wedge/groove - if the mag got stuck, it is a better way to rip it out.
Very nice product.
DOH! just saw the date of the post I was replying to…
what’s with dredging up all these threads to say, “yeah, me too!”…
