I just got my 24" SS rifle put together and I want to test it out with some decent ammo. My search function will not work with this browser so I’m just going to start a new thread. I see that Black Hills ammo seems to be a popular choice… Which grain seems to do better than others? 77? 69?
Whats the going price right now online for some decent match ammo?

Just buy a couple boxes of about 5 different types, and see which your gun likes the best.
I will say SMK’s tend to shoot well in most people’s guns. They are not too finicky of a bullet.
Hornady BTHP’s are another good choice.
Lighter grain stuff can be accurate but its affected more by wind drift, and doesn’t retain speed as well at longer distances.
Just off the top of my head Id try Black Hills red box 75GR OTM, Blackhills Red Box 77GR SMK, Silver State Armory 77GR SMK 5.56, Hornady 75GR BTHP “Match”, Hornady 75GR BTHP “Training” and Hornady 75GR TAP T2 5.56.
Expect to pay 75 cents to a dollar a pop.
I figured it would be a tad more expensive. Are BTHP as accurate as FMJ?

BTHP should be more accurate yes. All barrels are different so no one can really tell you what is going to be accurate for you.
Ive settled on SSA 77GR SMK 5.56 as it shoots well in what Ive shot it in, and I prefer 5.56 loads since they shoot a bit flatter than 223 pressure.
If you’re near a Cabelas, you can find a wide variety of matchish ammo in small quantities.
What is Cabellas? We don’t have any real gun stores down here.

I was making a joke… I’ve been looking through several ammo sites and most of them refer to the cabelas.com. I guess I’m going to have to buy a few 20 rd boxes from several manufacturers and see what works best.
When shooting a group, do you wait between shots to let the barrel cool?

nope…shoot your 5 or 10 shot groups at your pace. Pay attn. to the first cold / fowling shot to see where it falls into the group.
You may want to let the tube cool when switching flavors of ammo.
I like to foul the bore with 3 rounds of whatever ammo. I’ve had a clean cold bore shot be over an inch out of the “real” group.
Buy as many different loads as you can and buy what ever shoots best.
