MARS THUG - Colt's Government Model Series 70

A year ago I decided to commission my first custom project. My homework went on for about a month, deciding what I wanted out of this build, who to go to, etc. A good friend of mine who is also a member here suggested a name after our discussion of what I was looking for. That name was Steve Morrison of MARS Armament. Steve’s work has also been mentioned and discussed here, as well as pictures and reviews of his work. It was after these reviews and recommendations, that I decided to proceed.

My initial contact was with Brian Morrison, who is Steve’s brother. Brian discussed Steve’s philosophies in building firearms, inquired about what was important to me, and instructed me on how to proceed. Being this was my first experience, his direction was greatly appreciated. The start of the project was based on an old Colt Government Model. To the best of my knowledge, the serial number dates the production of this pistol back to the late 70’s. It was one intent to build a pistol as old as I am, being this was going to be a birthday present to myself.

A few months later, Steve contacted me to clarify the specifics to this project. During this time, he took the time to explain the pros and cons to the different options available. He never tries to “sell” you on things, but rather takes an “advising” approach to explaining his thoughts. We finally came to some conclusions, generated a build sheet and went from there. Here is the result.

Judging from everything that took place thus far, all the raves and recommendations are more than warranted. Steve is a great guy to deal with, displays an attention to detail of a perfectionist, always held communication as a high priority, and worked hard to ensure the satisfaction of his customers.

I will post an update on how it shoots as soon as I clear Hawaii’s (extremely unfavorable) mandatory 2 week waiting period.

That 1911 is an absolute beauty! Steve does some amazing work. Please let us know how it shoots.

Thanks for sharing. Every time I see a MARS custom 1911 I am impressed with the work and quite tempted.

Thats one nice 1911 !!
Please follow up with range report

That’s very nice - congrats!

very nice pistol! steve’s definitely great to work with.

Mine is due to be done very soon. I am approaching month twelve in my wait time, but I know the end result will be well worth the wait. Congrats on you new build, judging from the results of others who have guns by Steve, yours should be an extremely reliable shooter.

That has Badass written all over it!

That accurately describes Steve.

If anything he tries to help prevent you from paying for things you do not need.

Nice!

Steve is on my very short list of custom smiths I want a build from. Looks great!

soooo many sexy blasters here…

My God, that is one sweet 1911.

sweet blaster !

Anyone who gets a pistol back from him is just plain lucky. Lucky it only took a year instead of three.

Nice looking build! How does it shoot? Wasn’t aware that they started manufacturing their own parts.

Quite a nice 1911! I only have one question, as I am building (ordering the parts and having it assembled by a talented reputable smith) one soon, did you consider the “golf-ball/dimple” front strap option? and if so, what made you stay away from it?

Kev,

First, I’m gonna get some finger-lickin’ ribs for lunch. Then maybe some cotton candy. then I’m gonna head to our FFL to fondle your new blaster.

all jokes aside, it looks absolutely fantastic. All your personal requests looks like they’ve been filled perfectly, and I can’t wait till you let me shoot it.

I have had Steve build a total of 5 1911’s for me. 3 .45’s (2 THUGs and the original Direct Action), a 9mm, and a dedicated .22LR.

If you can stand the wait, he does good work. With his brother in the shop, I have noticed a significant improvement in comms.

Everything you need and not much else. I like it; looking forward to a range report.
