How do I find the manufacturing date of when the sox was made . I am about to buy one , just want to make sure what I am getting . Any tips on how to tell the gens apart or another info would be great . I got the serial number but couldn’t find how to look it up on Mossberg.com
The front sight and barrel thickness is a good tell of what gen you are getting. Look down the page at post 12 for info on the sight differences and images of the differences in barrel thickness.
The best tip I can give you is don’t buy it. If you do, go ahead and get to the Enos forums and find the Mossberg contact listed in the 930 thread, 'cause you’re probably going to need it.
That said, it looks like the latest iteration, at least by comparing your pic with the Mossberg one. Might be a good idea to call Mossberg with the serial number and see if they will tell you when it was manufactured.
The latter gens started showing up pre-2012 I know that much. I didn’t own my spx very long as it didn’t fill any need but it ran fine with 00buck and slugs. Never ran birdshot through it which seemed to be one it’s problems. YMMV
It looks to be a more recent gun. At least the Choate magazine extension appears to be straight. Mine was tweaked right out of the box. When I called Mossberg, they seemed to indicate I wasn’t the only one with that issue. They sent me a new one free of charge. Mine ran buck and slugs just fine and was probably 80% reliable with low brass loads. That was with probably only 150 rounds down the pipe. There have been so many little reliability and QC issues with the gun and it seems to still be the case with the JM edition. On paper its a great shotgun and I really wanted to like it, but I ended up selling mine and replaced it with a Benelli M4.
Well , I got a benelli supernova tactical pump . But really wanted the auto version , but don’t have the cash for the m4 tactical . Guy wants to trade me his 930spx for my Ruger Sr9c . I bought the 9mm for my wife but she doesn’t like it , and I like my colt and s&w 357 revolvers .
I lube everything I get with slip2000 and froglube .
I wanted to try a JM pro for 3 gun because I can’t justify the cost of some of the higher end 3 gun ready shotguns. I read up on all the problems & complaints on all the forums and found that it seems to be hit or miss. You either get one that runs or it doesn’t, but the JM has upgrades over the standard 930, like chroming of the gas system, etc. so I decided to take a chance and bought one last summer.
I got lucky. To date, I have over 750 asst rnds through it and have had 1 malfunction. Now, does that mean anything? Not really, but the hit or miss thing seems to be factual. I know that’s not an extreme round count, also, but those are fairly hard use rounds, most being rapid fire.
I keep it clean and lightly lube with EWL and have had good luck.
There seems to be a demand for the JMs, so should you decide later to try one and end up unhappy, I’d think selling it wouldn’t be that difficult.
Thanx for all the help , I have read that just shouldering the 930 reduces a lot of feeding problems . I will shoot mostly rifled slugs and buck shot in 2&3/4" , 3" shells . I will tear it down and put a coat of lube , maybe a follower and a barrel and mag clamp to keep things aligned . I am hoping any issues I may run into , you guys can talk me through it . This site is awesome , thanx again
If you Google spx reviews , a 3-gun shooter noticed on the auto feeding 930 would malfunction if you didn’t put it tight to your shoulder. Then saw other posts people complaining , they were told to shoulder it tighter , and it helped the op . Take it for what it’s worth , I was just trying to read up as much as I could before I made the trade . It might be a light load they were having trouble with ?
I did the trade , trying to tear down but the hulk himself must have put the mag extension cap on . I can’t get it to budge . Any tips , I sprayed it down with Lube and going to let it sit for a hour or so .
