Who here is running a Hound Dog on their rifle? What about LEO’s? How is it holding up? Does it way our rifle down? Pro’s (how does it work in open areas? Fields?), Cons (how does it work CQB/indoor searches?)
The Hound Dog is a great light for throw and it doesn’t do too bad short range indoors either with decent spill and “only” 325 lumens. I have not mounted it on an AR but I see no reason why it would not work just fine. I have had MD2’s on a Benelli M4 and an AR for months and many rounds with no issues. The bezel twist for high/low is unaffected by recoil (unless you take out the O-ring and lube it up :))
It is sorta big and heavy with that solid chunk of aluminum head, but I assume you need the spotlight capability. It can illuminate targets beyond my capability to see, over 200Y in this case.
Dennis.
My concern was the weight and like you said…that big clunky aluminum head…it seems that everyone who is bailing out recently likes to go running into the woods. So spotlight capability seems to be getting more and more important…
But…I just don’t wanna weigh the rifle down…
Oveready.com has a 1200 lumen drop in for surefire lights…but I like their C2 bodies but I don’t see too manymounts for that light…
I wouldn’t want to mount a HD on my AR unless dedicated to longer range use, although you could always use a QD mount just in case you needed it?
I don’t think any SF 6P drop in would give extra range regardless of lumen output due to the reflector limitations.
These lights have actually impressed me with their spot ability and I have one on my 16" Noveske AR-10 with no issues. Not too much bigger than a 6P either.

Enjoy!

Funny that you mentioned the O-Light. I use the M20 warrior R2 for my primary handheld light. Was also thinking of the Maelstrom G5 but I’m not a big fan of the donut in the middle of the beam…
Interesting how we are always looking for something extra huh? I have the opposite problem that you do in that I usually carry an Olight M30 or Malkoff Wildcat v2 but most of my customers are usually close by inside a small house and I have too much light!
Dennis.
Someone mounted this with an offset mount on a Noveske Recce, he posted a pic on another forum and feedback - apparently it works swell despite being relatively bulky. I guess if you compare it to a Surefire Millennium with the Turbo head and 9V battery compartment it’s really quite small. ![]()
I don’t want to post his picture without his knowledge but I’ll try to point him here if he wants to share his experiences with this setup.
It is! I work in a Metropolitan City. Lights are tools. Some work better than others in certain situations. We could be doing a building search one second and then searching the woods another second. I try to be as prepared as possible but I dont have the fundage to buy everything in the market. I usually carry a couple different lights in my “Oh Snap!” bag and misc equipment for different missions.
Its just I believe that we are at the point where we need to be prepared for anything and everything. And the only thing I trust is what I have.
Aweosme…thanks!!
Haha, I checked out my HD last night and it isn’t prohibitively heavy, and with a MD2 tube it probably would mount fine on a rifle especially as compared to SF monstrosities of the past :).
If you need that kind of spot, then just throw it on there and work out some more! QD would be nice too.
Dennis.
I agree that it is definitely not overly heavy, with the MD2 it, to me, is a pocket light. But with the current trends to trim and slim the rifle, especially at the front end, I thought long-range lighting would get the axe for something like a tiny, lightweight E2 or G2.
I think our gear bags may be similarly heavier than most! My partners are pretty understanding when I load up the trunk with all my stuff over theirs, although I am still leaving a big bag of lesser stuff in my POV!
The closest I come to the woods is a backyard cluttered with crap, however there is the occasional parking lot or swap meet…

Well said Dennis - I couldn’t agree more!
I’m running a Malkoff Hound Dog (with SF Z49) on a Noveske recce, and so far, its working out rather well. Significantly, its a rifle setup specifically for outdoor operations in a rural area (particularly for perimeter assignments and general reconnoitering). Since the rifle was intended for longer ranges, it’s also fitted with a TA11E. Using what I call the toolbox approach, I also have a MK18 for general call outs, raids/entries, interior searches, etc.
My experience with Malkoff products has been overall very good and the Hound Dog is no exception. Its a fine light and really throws a spot a long way - perfect for the outdoors where you may need target discrimination at extended distances. The HD wouldn’t fit everyone’s mission requirements - I chose to mount a SF 6P/Malkoff M60 on the Mk18.
A few weeks back, I posted concerning the Hound Dog in the following thread where the OP asked about weapon lights for outdoor use.

An attachment (6233) there links to a pic of the Noveske with the HD mounted in a Vltor offset mount. Its also viewable in the picture posting thread - post #52 on pg 3.
Those are some nice tools to have! The Malkoff stuff is super nice and after some use I think I am convinced that the Malkoff MD2 body is better than a 6P for weapon mounting because of it’s easier to use switch, hi/low bezel, and ability to mount along the whole length since the tailcap is not removable.
Dennis.
The only drawback, in my opinion, is the clicky switch. I am of the mind a weaponlight should only have a momentary tail switch. But different strokes for different folks.
I LIKE the Reece! But as mentioned earlier - different light for different missions. Current mission - border patrol, long distance recon.
I go back and forth on this every time I run into different building search situations. In fact, I basically have a twisty momentary AND a clicky for every weaponlight I own (many) because I used to keep changing my mind. Sometimes I want to search and move with only momentary light, sometimes I am being slow and deliberate and need the light ON all the time. Or vice-versa, or mixed up depending on the situation. That is why I like the long throw and stiff clickiness of the Malkoff MD2, it let’s me have momentary with a reduced chance of clicking ON, but I can click ON if I want to.
A compromise, to be sure, but one that is increasingly working well for me.
Dennis.
That’s the reason I really have grown to like the Z48/Z49 switches. They’re shrouded and have lock-out to help me avoid ADs; I can use the twisty feature to make for a long, deliberate momentary, an easy momentary or a click-on depending on the particular circumstances I’m dealing with.
There are too many times when I need light and don’t want to divert any of my attention to thinking about keeping it on. Other times, I definitely want to lock it out. Its a flexible system that works for me, but a compromise as well. I’ve chosen Z48/49 for all my long gun weaponlights so at least that’s a constant. You have to train to your gear/mission whatever choices you make (or that are made for you).
Yeah, I had forgotten about my Z48/Z49’s because they are just so BIG they migrated to the back of the box.
Maybe I will dig mine out and experiment with the momentary adjustability.
Dennis.
The Kroll clicky on the Malkoffs does have quite a long throw before you latch it compared to others, it’s good that way. Malkoff is now moving from the Kroll to the ‘McClicky’ which is more like a Surefire clicky in use. I like my McClicky switch lights for general use, but its got very short throw and the momentary feature is almost too easy to activate (white light AD danger).
MD3 and MD4 bodies have already moved on from the Kroll, I suggest you buy an MD2 or two before those change too if you prefer the current one. ![]()
