Today my buddy and I went to the range with 450 rounds of Wolf 7.62X39 HP and my MAK-90. I had 7 malfunctions: failed to fire 5 times and failed to feed 2. This was my first time firing this rifle…
How bad are these results? Was it just the ammo?
I would appreciate any input.

Need a lot more information on the rifle. Was it new in the box, how used/overall condition of the weapon. Have you cleaned the cosmoline or old preservative oil out of it?
What condition is the ammo in? How old is it, how was it stored?
My MAK will eat anything and Ive never had one issue. Is the weapon clean?
The fail to feed issues could be the use of JHPs in a rifle not designed for. Its a simple fix.
As failure to fire, that could be gunk in the firing pin channel, or the infamous “file down the firing pin to make it auto, yo”(yes, I’ve seen it).
I love sharing that one with the ghetto folks at the range.
But… but… It’s an AK malfunctioning is unpossible!!!

The rifle is used, very good condition. Rifle was properly cleaned and lubricated prior to shooting. Ammo was about 1 year old, stored in plastic bad and duffle bag under the bed.
Some Chinese guns don’t like the HP’s very much, a little polishing where the bullet nose hits the chamber going in might help.
I’d check to make sure the firing pin is in good condition and that the firing pin channel is clear of debris.
Beyond that, might be an ammo issue.

My MAK gobbles up fmj and hp fine, it hates soft points tho…
Would slightly widening, and polishing the feed ramp be a smart idea??

And I’d be more worried about the failures to fire than a feeding issue. Try another batch of ammo after making sure the firing pin is intact and the firing pin channel is good to go.
Knock the pin out and get the firing pin out and take a look at it and the firing pin chamber.
Did you try a different mag?

I have a firing pin gauge at home. If you have a caliper and cam measure, I can tell you the min and max for firing pin protrusion while inside the bolt.

+1. I have had totally reliable AKs malfunction due to a bad or problematic magazine. I would check this first, then the hp ammo thing second. My guess is, between one of these two items, you will find the problem. These are the easy fixes.
I had 3 different mags. One of which was Chinese. But I disassembled the bolt and I was surprised to find there was gunk around the firing pin. I’m sure that was the problem.
Haven’t seen an ak malfunction thread in a looooong time.
