Magpul Rifle Length Hand Guards

I think I know the answer here but I’m not 100% so I’m asking anyways…

The rifle length hand guard, when installed, the little tab at the top of the hand guard sticks outside of the hand guard retainer. Since I tried everything to get the tab under the retainer my guess is that since the retainer is triangular this is how they are supposed to be.

The same tab is inside the carbine circular retainer.

Anybody know for sure or did I instal the hand guard wrong?

Carbine:

I have two midlength uppers with MOE forends and triangle retainers. They both look just like that and work fine. I put one on, but the other came from the factory and it looks just like that.

Mine Too

yours looks fine to me…
does it wiggle excessively? seem to fit badly? the plastic tab you’re referencing is a smaller ridge that sits outside the retainer.
inside the retainer the hand-guard is shaped to fit inside the retainer.

unless I’m wrong (often am) the plastic tab/ridge you’re questioning simply doens’t exist on the shorter guards and that’s why you don’t see it.

my rile length fit:

that’s the only one I have.

On my middy the tab is outside, on my friends 6920 the tab is inside. It’s fine.

Thanks guys. Mine does not wiggle and feels tight but was used to having the tab inside the HG retainer on all my carbines. I chalked the difference up to different style HG retainers but wanted to be sure.

Just reread your message…the shorter hand guards DO have the tab/ridge.

My Mid length guards were manufactured in '13, and the tab is on the outside.

would that tab be there to allow the Magpul handguards to work with both circular and triangular endcaps?

that would be my guess

I see FDE K-Var furniture… I like it.

Good eye.

They like to call it “desert tan” it’s a cool color…looks mean with a 4.5mm triangle folder.

That’s what I’m thinking.

Well… I was an AK guy long before I was an AR guy lol.

I’ve been kicking around the idea of the same setup a lot lately… Either building off a kit or getting a 107FR with a triangle folder and the “desert tan” handguards.

Looks good to me.

Nice! Gotta love the AK. Tough to beat the 107FR especially when they are under $1K (I may or may not have four of them). Unfortunately as I am sure you know kits (especially original barrel kits) really aren’t that cheap anymore.

eta: I think they call it desert sand not tan…not that it really matters but incase someone was searching on FDE and coming up empty. I have seen some retailers call it FDE…

at first i thought that was cholesterol but its gotta be testosterone.

Correct.

Heh, FDE, desert sand, desert tan, it’s all short for “should really just paint the stupid thing” I guess.

I never had a Bulgarian before, just Russian, Romanian, Serbian, and a Polish for a short while. I like Bulgarians, just never got around to buying one. I’d like one just to have, but also because my SGL-21 is just tits, but it is the fixed version, and that will forever nag me.

Yea making that SGL an AK-103 clone would take a pretty penny now and most 5.5mm trunnions floating around are the lame civilian cut out kind.

I REALLY like the SLRs. They are obviously not true AK-103 clones but they are very high quality.

Pic from another thread I just posted showing my new A4 (few SLRs in the background)
